Hi folks,

Engine is a 5.7GL 4BBL

I will post up pics a little later of how the nightshift went installing the new lump. I have a couple of small issues but I am not sure that they are actually a problem...

My old engine had a cylinder style coil and prestolite distributer... the new engine has electronic coil and EST distributer... is my loom cross compatible?

Also the new fuel pump came with a different oil pressure sensor with three terminals, do I swap this with my single terminal sensor... I understand this new design cuts the engine off if the oil pressure is not high enough, I expect this is better than an alarm but again, how does it wire and what do I do with the old alarm wire? tie it off?

What was your old engine, and what is your new engine?

Again, that depends on how your wiring harness is set up.
PS: That oil pressure switch is NOT to shut the engine off. That would be a very dangerous thing to have happen on a boat.

When you do engine swaps like this, you need to post model numbers of your old engine, and what your new engine is if you want accurate information.
Don't expect people to remember your specifics from post to post.

Re: New engine installed!!!! but...

I have the old engine on a crate now and there are no model numbers on it whatsoever :-( It's a 5.7GL thats for sure...

The new engine serial number sticker is 005559, not sure that helps :-S

I took pictures of the instal for those who are interested... here they are :)

Not sure on the fuel pump, i'll need to check tomorrow...

The carb is an Edelbrock 1409 Performer Series... I love the look of that baby!!!

This is the description -

BRAND NEW 5.7L Vortec works in nearly all 5.0L and 5.7L marine applications from 1986-2011 with no modifications. This 5.7L is rated at 315 hp @ 5000 RPM at the crank and comes with the following components:
?2011 5.7L Vortec Marine Engine - Cast iron block, teflon coated pistons, high flow Vortec cylinder heads with sintered powered-metal exhaust valve seat inserts, high performance GM marine roller cam shaft with roller valve lifters. These are just a few of the features that add up to more horsepower, greater low end torque, excellent durability, and longevity.
?Cast-Iron or Aluminum Hi-Rise Intake Manifold - 4 barrel intake manifold for its lightweight durable design and 15hp increase over standard intake manifolds. This manifold is made for fresh water and the harshest salt water environments.
?Edelbrock 1409 Marine Carburetor - 4 barrel with electric choke, 600 cfm, 30cc accelerator pump, "J" tubes, etc (U.S. Coast Guard approved), flame arrestor with breather tube and pcv hookup. one-piece flexable fuel line.
?Electric Fuel Pump Kit - a low pressure 4-7 psi electric fuel pump (U.S. Coast Guard Approved), delivers the right amount of fuel to the carburetor. Also includes fuel pump bracket and oil pressure switch. Loss of oil pressure will automatically shut off the fuel pump thereby preventing gas vapors from accidental ignition and preventing possible damage to the engine.
?Delco Voyager Ignition Kit - Voyager distributor with Electronic Spark Timing (EST), High energy ignition coil, 8mm marine spark plug wires and spark plugs, shift interrupt wire, timing tool, and other misc wires to easily connect to any existing marine engine wire harness. (U.S. Coast Guard Approved).
?Also included - 14" I/O flywheel, bi-directional circulation pump; harmonic balancer; 5-quart marine oil pan (5.5 quarts of oil required with oil filter); flame arrestor; high-quality, side mounted dip stick and tube; EZ oil drain kit.

You are going to have to splice in the connectors for the EST coil. Your harness has the diodes in it for control of the fuel pump, so you will not need the oil pressure switch if using the OEM harness. Just connectors for the new style pump.
You also don't need the shift interrupt wiring for your installation.

Wiring diagram is phenominal Don... do you know where I can download a PDF on the 5.7GL-B... The Volvo site only has a paper version in which case I would need to wait :-S

I need torque specs etc for the manifolds and risers.

Thanks again,

Stan

The basic engine is the same, torque specs etc. I just gave you the wiring diagram to show you how Volvo wired the EST into the engine. Timing is in the link above.

I can't find the torque specs for the risers, only the manifolds... you are Mr manual Don... there must be one lingering somewhere in your archive ;-)

Thanks again Don...

I made a bit of a mistake when fitting the manifolds to the head for the first time and I wonder what you think...

I fitted the nuts finger tight and then tightened each bolt a total of 180 degrees over two passes which was reasonably tight... I expected this to be very little torque in comparison to what I would actually need to tighten but could be sure i heard a little chink sound.. almost like a crack. Then tonight when I actually had my torque wrench with me and the manual (thanks Don) I see that the required torque is very little 20-26 ft.lb. As soon as I popped my wrench on there it was clicking straight away... i loosened and torqued to 26 ft.lb but im concerned now that I have cracked my new manifold by overtorqing... is this possible?

Ayuh,... Anything is possible, but that's doubtful...
Fire it up, 'n see if it leaks...

Where would I see it leaking? Would it not be into the cylinder?

I'm sure it's fine Bondo, thanks for the support. If there are no external leaks, what are the symptoms of it leaking into the exhaust ports?
