New engine started - chuffing sound...

Hi guys,

I installed a new 350 Vortec with 4bbl edelbrock 1409 into my boat and took my time over wiring/plumbing and whatnot.

Got the engine started on the muffs tonight, the first thing i noticed was with the new waterpump both circulating and raw the muffs got sucked onto the outdrive good and proper... this concerned me a little which I will expand on in a minute.

The engine took what seemed like forever to start and at times we had to give the starter motor a break.. eventually she kicked and since then she will start on the button. I was happy it happened this way as it gave the oil pump plenty of time to prime the engine.

Now onto the running... immediately i noticed an unusual chuffing sound... I have no idea what it is but its definately there... like a steam train chuff chuff chuff chuff....

There are new manifolds and risers installed so I suspected perhaps it was something to do with this, can anyone shed any light on what this could be...

Anyway after around 5-10 minutes of idling time the dash alarm(not engine) sounded to say the temp was entering the red, I expect this is due to there being insufficient flow from the muffs so I shut her off with the niggling worry.... what was that chuffing noise.

Maybe your raw water pump dying because of lack of water. You have the hose on full?

I considered that, my old water pump would certainly not suck the muffs on like that i can tell you... i think i'll get her to the water and let her drink all she likes... cant be sure its the pump though :-S

If you are hearing it out of the carb, a tight intake valve that doesn't close will cause it. could even be crossed plug wires.

Re: New engine started - chuffing sound...

I have located it to the starboard rear of the block.. when i get close it's actually more of a ticking.... do the valve clearances need adjusted on this type of engine?

Also, I need to check the plug gaps as i don't think they are correct. Hooked up timing light and it's flashing intermittantly on cylinder 1 but consistantly on others. Manual says 1.52mm, can anyone confirm?

Best wishes,

Stan

Not sure what manual you are looking at, but the marine manual I gave you a link to for your engine, calls for 0.89mm

That is also assuming you are using the Prestolite ignition system Volvo had in it.

I suspect you may be right on my plug Gap Don, you usually are but the ignition system changed from prestolite to EST so I am not sure.

Got the feeler gauges and timing light at the ready. I presume it is still 10degrees BTDC or should it be 12 now that I have the 4bbl?

Best wishes,

You should use the 1.5 gap with the EST ignition. Timing will be the same with either carb.

Re: New engine started - chuffing sound...

1.5 Gap now done, ignition timing set to 10 degree BTDC engine sounding sweeter but not idling perfect... a little lumpy.

As I was setting the timing the timing light was still missing beats on number 1 and I suspect that the supplied ignition leads and delco plugs (which are now the long threads) should be replaced. I would take advice on which kit to get particularly with regards to the plug. I was getting little shocks off of the port side riser as my bare arm was resting on it so I suspect some sort of HT leakage.

Onto the chuffing noise which is now much more clearly a ticking noise now that the engine is idling quieter it's easier to identify. Are there valve clearances that must be set on this engine? I thought it was all hydraulic or perhaps im misinformed.

Thanks again,

Stan

If you are getting intermittant spark on #1, it sure isn't going to run right. move the plug wire to a different cylinder and see if the problem follows the wire. Could also be a cracked cap, or bad plug.

The cap is 100%, checked and all ok.

Found a crack in the ceramic on plug 7 so I think the plugs are the first port of call.... Don, do you know the comparible NGK part number?

Best wishes,

I don't know, Volvo only gives Volvo part numbers and I have no idea what they convert to anymore.. What came with the engine when you bought it?

Researching previous posts suggests - NGK BPR6EFS

The plugs that were installed when it arrived were Delco.... I don't have the part number handy.. I can check tomorrow.
