New Engine, Trouble Planing

I have a RYDS 495 16 foot open sports fisher, my old Johnson 40hp 2 stroke recently gave up the ghost and I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new engine. I decided on a Evinrude E-Tech 60HP which runs fantastically. The only problem I have is that the new engine finds it much harder than the old one to reach plane, once there it runs V well but struggles through the revs between 3000 and 3500 until planing, is this just due to the new engine and is their anything I can do as a perminent solution?
thanks

What prop are you running?
What does your manual say for max rpm for your new motor?
Do you have T&T? If you do, are you trimmed all the way down on take off? If no T&T, consider tucking motor in(down)a notch.

If it's new, who installed it? If a dealer, then hand him the problem first. It may be a tuning issue, judging by your healthy WOT figure.

How much heavier is the new engine than the old one?
Have you tried to relocate some weight to the front to see if it gets better?

The prop you have is about right for the E-tec. Check the "X" dimension as the motor may be mounted too low. The AV plate should be flush or slightly above the bottom of the boat with the engine perfectly vertical. If the AV plate is below the hull, raise the engine one notch and try it. Don't go so high though, that you lose water pressure. Also verify that the tach is accurate. The E-tec has very deep gearing in the lower unit (2.67:1) and should pop that boat up on plane with no problem.

The Prop I am running is the one that came with the engine, the WOT is as manufacturers spec, The installers have done sea trials and adjusted the engine and in their opion its just the boat/engine combination. I'm going to experiment with the weight distribution as before the boat starts planing the nose really goes up in the air, I'll let you how I get on

thanks

Does the boat porpoise at top speed? If so, the engine trim angle needs to be adjusted. If not, you may require trim tabs or a hydrofoil.

Sorry Cobra 3.0, hate to be ignorant but new to the boating game, what exactly is porpoising?

Porpoise means the bow gets to bouncing up and down, even on relative calm water. If the bow rises overly high as you try to get on plane, it would appear you have a trim problem. Trim all the way down during the start. Adjust trim when you get on plane.

The Boat Doesn't porpoise, only if you raise the trim too high whilst planing, I always start with the trim all the way down then adjust when planing. nose still overly raises before planing

So how long does it take to reach plane if you go full throttle?

With WOT the nose raises at about 2500 revs, then when it gets to 3000 revs the rev increase slows dramatically until around 4000 when the boat starts to plane, going from 3000 to 4000 revs (planing) can take around 15 seconds. Then once planing I have to pull back the throttle quickly as the revs increase really quickly.

I'm out this weekend so am going to mess around with the weight distribution to see if that helps

thanks

Hi,

Have the E-tech got past break in period (if they need break in)?

You have a weight penalty of about 40 lb/19 kg on the transom now with the Evinrude E-tech 60 compared to the old Johnson 40 2-stroke.
Could be a weight distribution thing now.
I pair of Smart Tabs may also correct the planing problem.

Put a 20-40 lb/10-20 kg sand bag in the front and see if that helps, or just place a passanger in the front.

Re: New Engine, Trouble Planing

15 seconds to go 3000 -4000 rpm sure sure is a lomg time.Ill bet that old 40 could plane flat out in 15 seconds. It sure seems like a flat spot in the tuning. It is possible the new motor doesnt tuck in as far as the old one. They sell wedges to put between the bracket and the transom
to add more or less tuck depending on which way the wedges are inserted.Im no expert but 15 seconds to go through 1,000 rpm on a normally loaded boat seems like an eternity.

How high is your motor setup it almost sounds like your trying to blow out.

Re: New Engine, Trouble Planing

Well, brought a 25kg back of sand from my local building suppliers and installed it into the bow, what a difference, the revs increase at a steady rate, the boat planes quickly and seam a bit more stable once planing, with more than one person in the boat though I have to get them to sit near the front until on the plane - no big deal. Thanks for all you ideas and suggestions
