I have a 16ft open hull boat which I have had a Johnson 40hp (1991) for some time, happy with performance and speed. However I have to replace the engine and am looking at a Evinrude 35hp (1997) with 3 cylinders, do you think the reduction in HP will affect the top speed and performance very much?

thanks in advance

Tim

Re: New Engine

Thicklin,
You'll drop a bit in performance, but I dont think it will be all that noticeable. 12.5% drop wont kill you :) Your top end may be within 1-2 mph of the 40. hole shot will take a slight bit longer.

On the flip side, I believe you're Johnson is a 2 cylinder...going to 3 cylinders will make the engine run a lot smoother with less vibration.

Nav

Not a great deal, probably, but you'll see a little off the top speed and a bit slower hole shot. Overall...it will probably work out OK.
