new fuel pump, won't idle

I put on a new fuel pump on my johnson 60hp, 85'. I took off the old one with vro and put fuel only pump on. It will run great at high speed, but will not run for any time at low speed. Acts like it is not getting enough gas. Any suggestions?

I've got a rebuilt '87 Evinrude 70hp VRO (plugged) with the same problem. Won't hold idle speed in gear for more than 15 seconds or so. My fuel primer bulb won't stay full so I believe I've probably got an air leak somewhere on the suction side of the fuel pump. Sounds like you may have something similar. Should check all fittings, hoses, etc. all the way back to the tank for leaks.

If the fuel pump will stay up with fuel requirements at high speed then it will supply enough fuel for idle. I'd suspect grungy idle circuits in the carbs
