I have a 1972 Sea Ray. I'm not sure of the model. Does anyone know where I can get a custom permanent belly tank fabricated in southern california? I need help on the tank details. I know the size of the enclosure but don't know how much room to leave all around and what the installation techniques would be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jeff

I have a 1970 SeaRay 18 foot closed bow and put in a permanent tank, but before we give advice, give us some more detail of what size your boat is, and what the fuel tank location is, etc.

Most aluminum welding shops can do it. If you call a few you're sure to find one with experience. Go to the library and find a copy of ABYC's standards. They're very good and you'll have a safe install if you follow their recommendations.

Re: New Fuel Tank

The boat is 25'long. It too has a closed bow, sleeps 2, some underseat storage and a small porta potty.
The deck space is open and seats 6.
The original tank was mounted in the belly, in front of the engine compartment and was about 90 gal, we calculated. The tank opening is 24.5" wide X 102" long X 11.5" tall (side height) at the front tapering to 8.5" tall (side height) at the back. The shape of the tank compartment is trapezoidal in cross section. The fill hose and vent line went out the starboard side at the front, under the deck then up the the side to the fittings. I believe there was also a drain tube from the front of the boat back to the engine compartment in the belly.
We started to smell gas and determined it was leaking so we cut it out. This was a long time ago so I don't remember how it was mounted, isolated from the boat hull, all the small details that I need to know now.
What is the ABYC standards book??
Thanks,
Jeff

Bug - Can't give you suggestions for S. Cal but here in Miami I would hit the Yellow Pages and look for local respected boat builders - call and ask them who makes their tanks.

Yeah, get one welded up, its not a difficult for the shop, and have them weld some mounting hardware on there to match your boat. When you mount the tank you want to keep some air around it. Good Luck.
