New gimbal housing gasket?

I am restoring an I/O and I'm trying to amass any new gaskets or seals I'll need when it's reassembly time. Is the gimbal housing gasket a "must replace" piece when reassembling the engine/outdrive? The curent gasket looks/feels OK, but I've done some searching here and on the web, and I can't find anything about replacement. Drive is an Alpha 1 Gen 2.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: New gimbal housing gasket?

Do you really mean gimbal housing gasket or do you mean bell-housing gasket?

Gimbal housing gasket (actually a big fat 'O' ring) goes between the gimbal housing and the transom of the boat, bell-housing gasket goes between the bell-housing and the drive...

Gaskets and seals should always be replaced when things are taken apart. Keeps you from having to take it apart a second time because you thought it was good.

Yup, the gimbal housing gasket. I've got everything off the back of the boat for a transom replacement. I already have the bell housing gasket. (By the way, thanks for your Youtube video on pulling an outdrive. You got me started on doing this mechanical stuff myself! Thanks!)

OK, I'll order a new one. Thanks!

That gasket cross section is round, not D shaped and flat where it fits up against the transom.

Re: New gimbal housing gasket?

Looks like the gasket I need is OEM part #43713 ... for something like this, is aftermarket (e.g., Sierra) OK, or should I stick with OEM?

Thanks,
Jim

Well, look at it this way. It's less than a $10 part and for something like that which is not easily replaceable and is what could ruin all the work and money your are about to spend fixing the transom, I would not settle for anything less than OEM.

Re: New gimbal housing gasket?

Makes sense, Mark. There isn't a great difference in price between OEM and aftermarket brands. I was mainly asking because I like to buy from iboats whenever possible, and they don't seem to carry the OEM stuff. Also, I'm rather new to doing my own repairs, and I'm trying to learn when it matters to use OEM and when it doesn't. My lesson here is that for a critical, hard-to-replace part, it doesn't make sense to buy other than OEM.

Thanks to you and the other experts for the advice. OEM seal has been ordered!

I'll just throw this out there since you made that statement and though you were referring to oem vs. aftermarket, here's something else I've learned as I'm trying to still in the early stages learning myself.

When ordering low dollar cost stuff like seals, gaskets, o-rings, bolts, etc., I order at least 1 extra just in case something comes damaged, I lose it:facepalm:, I damage it :facepalm:I put it on wrong necessitating its removal,:facepalm::facepalm: etc.

Doing that a little at a time doesn't hit the pocket book to bad and you have some spares on hand just in case you, or maybe even a mate you meet locally or on the other side of the world may be in need and you can help them out.
