I am looking to buy a used boat that I can tow with my 98 Volvo V70. The owner's manual says I can tow up to 2,000 lbs w/o brakes on the trailer and up to 3,000 with a trailer with brakes.

I am looking at some boats locally and have trouble determining the weight of the boat and trailer. From doing some research on the internet (how I got here) the Glastron SX175 with the 3.0L 4 Cyl looks likes something I could handle. I was hoping to get something with a little more power.

I have towed boats previously when I had a 19'6" Wellcraft Bowrider from the late 70's early 80's. It was a heavy boat and I ended up buying a 78 Jeep Cherokee (the old big one) to tow it. I don't want to have to do that again, so I am looking for something I can tow with my existing cars.

Look at the NADA site for the weights. The Glastron runs 2335 lbs dry according to the site. So, you likely will be over weight on it with gear, passengers, fuel and the trailer.

I'd be thinking aluminum.

check out page 9 of the "what do you tow your boat with". There is a sweet princecraft there. Something along that line may work.

I said the heck with it and bought a GMC Envoy and a Crestline 180 with 190 HP. Decided against trying to tow with the V70. I bought the Envoy for about the same amount that I will sell the V70 for. I wanted a nice boat and not another car or truck. Once the boat is paid for I will get a Volvo XC90 V8.
