Hey everyone, new guy here. Last fall I purchased my first boat, a 1997 Glastron SE175. Aside from the paint/graphics being faded and a few busted cup holders it is a nice looking and running rig. This weekend I am hoping to finally get time to install a depth finder(not sure how previous owners went without one) and build a custom trolling motor bracket so I don't have to put holes in the fiberglass. I just wanted to introduce myself and I'm looking forward to the using the knowledge of everyone on this forum!

Re: New Guy

Congratulations on your rig and Welcome to iBoats. If you've been "lurking" around for a while (as many do!) you know that there are a bunch of experienced folks on these forums that are more than willing to help you out. Just ask:eek:

Nice looking boat...Welcome to the club. Can't imagine operating without a depthfinder. Looks like you can buff the life back into the faded gelcoat. Post up some more pics and stats.

:welcome: Looks like a fun boat. You were smart to put in a depth finder. Very fast way to get into trouble without one!

Be sure to post pictures of your custom trolling motor bracket that doesn't require any holes!
And I'm with the "get a depth finder" crowd. GPS mapping too if you can afford it. Some of the areas I fish, the fog rolls in and everything looks the same (gray). I'd be in a world of trouble without the mapping and seriously considering radar. It's one thing to know where to steer and how deep it is but if you can't see...... well, you get the point.
Have fun with the new boat!

I guess it would depend on where you boat. Here in New England where the waters are murky they help not only in keeping you off things you can't see but also in helping to confirm your location by using the depth readings on your chart when the fog rolls in.

I will definitely post up some pictures. I have an idea in my head of how I will get it to work, we'll see if it actually pans out.

I bought the Lowrance Mark 4 which has the GPS built in. I thought it would be nice to be able to mark where I find fish. I've also heard I could get myself lost at night if I am on the river so I thought I should take the extra precaution.

Thanks to everyone for the greetings, I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum.

Here in MN we go to so many lakes, some clear and some murky. It would be at the very least unnerving to have an I/O that doesn't trim as far as an outboard in strange waters. On our home lake that is very deep and clear and nearly impossible to find a shallow spot or the ones we frequent...no problems. There's probably a good seat belt analagy or bike helmet analagy here I suppose. At the absolute least a depth finder is a cheap preventative measure.
