I was dissapointed to read that Zamak coatings will not hold up in salt water use. That and the fact that the bow and stern eyes on my MFG are slightly larger than anything I have found (and have 1/2" shanks) new makes me think of having the old parts re-chrome plated.

The old eyes are missing all the chrome, but show no signs of pitting or rust. They just look a dark beige color. Do you think having the local plating service re-plate them will result in a finish that will last 5 -10 years if well maintained?

Thanks,
Mark

Re: New hardware vs Replating old....

When I restored my boat I bought all new when possible (its a lot cheaper) but there was a couple of things that were unique to the boat and had to be redone. I found a place (Annapolis Plating, they are on the web) to do them. Turned out great and they still look like new (3years) but like I said it aint cheap. I also found out there is different types of chroming. Make sure you tell them that it is for a boat and it is used in saltwater. I think it has something to do with the formula they use.
