Hello guys, im new here jsut joined today, im 20 and from indiana. Lately i have been looking for a older boat with agood motor that needs some interior work i was looking at 1978 or newer, basically jsut to take out on the local water and tub and have fun in.

My uncle has a 1982 AMK crestliner he said he would let me get for $400.
It needs a new ignition, someone lost the key adn he says he had it running last year before someone lost the key. i know the floor will need replaced and new carpet and wood in some places but the interior is workable and useable my only concern is the engine, he says it ran fine its an yahama outboard i think its a 90hp? i may be wrong i dont know alot about boats but it is an outboard yahama motor. Is there a way to check the motoro to see if it runs or is in good conditon?

If the motor is good would this be a good project boat used to cruisin the local water and tubing with friends?

Welcome to iboats Dry Dock,

Nice looking rig there, let me try and answer all your questions.

#1 The engine....start a thread in the Yamaha Outboard section and you'll get much better answers than you will here. But you are dead on target by checking out the outboard first, make sure she's in good shape.

#2 This looks like a tinny (aluminum) right?

#3 If it's an aluminum boat then your deck repairs will be much easier to do, and much quicker as well. Let us know for sure if it's fiberglass or aluminum and we'll go from there.

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

thank you for the welcome.

the boat is about 20 mins away, but my dad says that hes postive it is a fiberglass boat

It has been sitting for alteaste a year without a cover so the seats are perfect but with a little cleaning im sure i can make the seats work, i dont want to do a full restoration, i just basically want to get it running good and the floor replaced.

for being 20 my credit is really good, so i figure ill start with this boat see how much i actually use it and enjoy it and if i like it next season or the season after ill take out a loan and get a $3000-5000 range boat.

Just a thought, you say the floor needs to be replaced.A concearn is if the floor is bad , how much water damage is there underneath it? If the boat is fiberglass then you could also be looking at bad stringers or transom due to water damage. Take the time to look it over good with this in mind.
Since you are not want a complete restore take a second look.
Just a thought, Lee

That is an understatement ..

Pay your uncle and say thank you very gratuitously :) ..

If the motor is good..then .. if the thing needs a total resto your base investment is returnable ..

That sure looks like an aluminum hull to me. That's the deal of the century for sure. Those Yamaha triples are awesome motors.

I cant tell from blowups of the pics.. but do tins have lapstrakes and hanging bulsters in this size range ? ( Im asking because I dont know how they do that with Alum lap strake design ).

If its an Alum or FG boat I say Steal it ( your Uncle knows what it is so its kinda Given to you :) ). .. You cant steal what has been given..

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

I was at a family gathering tonight was talking to my uncle, he thinks its fiberglass. He said i could take it home this week without paying him and start tinkering with it, so i will prolly just go get it this weekend and give him half now and half in a few weeks, he said he would help me get it running if i need help, but im not counting on that haha

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

im pretty excited about geting this boat ive been all over craigslist looking at boats ive been in every Local craigslist wtihen 200 miles lol

i figure if i get it for 400 and say put 200 into it and feel like im over my head i think i could sell it for what i would have it according to some of the prices i see on craigs list.

I will def post more pics of it when i get it home and start taking the floor apart.

Since i dont know anytihng about boat motors, and my dad nkows all about cars but not boats. If the motor does need work should i try to tackle it my self with the help of family or take it to a shop?

The motor alone is worth way more than your uncle is asking! If you need to replace the floor and do any motor work, you will spend $200 in no time, so don't set that as your $ benchmark. Do a search on here about floor replacement and see what materials cost. If it really is an aluminum hull and you don't have stringers and transom to replace like on a rotted fiberglass boat, you would be in great shape with this rig.

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

thanks for the input so far guys. My first on my to do list is going to clean it real good.
Then get a new igniton and get the motor running, the whole floor isnt bad theres just a couple of soft spots that could used to replaced so once i get it cleaned up and running im sure i could take it out as is. But i would like to replace the floor that way when i have friends in it i dont have to worry about them making it worse or geting injured.

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

Under the floor you have stringers, and the transom is the back wall support of the boat?

Im watching a video now and the way it looks under the floor you have a wood frame set up. Can anyone explain whats under the floor deck, or a picture diagram would be really nice, i knowit wont be just like the boat im geting but i would like to get an idea.

If its mostly wood framing and making sure its water proofed and such i think i woudl be able to handle that.

Sorry for my sucky spelling grammer! lol

Since that boat is aluminum, it's much easier than that. You've got aluminum stringers. The plywood deck is just screwed or riveted to that. The plywood transom is just slid into a pocket and bolted into place. You could theoretically replace all the wood on that boat in a weekend (that of course doesn't allow time for properly sealing the wood etc etc).

Under the deck:

New deck installed:

Transom wood fitted:

Transom sealed and installed:

Viola!

Check out this thread of a similar boat restored http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=362861 or any of the other aluminum boat restores (Starcraft).

Re: New here, found a project boat, maybe?

Thanks those pics really helped. so i think i udner stand this.

1. if the boat is alluminum then it will have aluminum stringers, and a wood transom?

2. If its fiberglass boat it has wood stringer and woon transom?

The only reason i still bring up the fiberglass is cause my dad really thinks and fiberglass and my unccle said he wasnt sure whne i called and asked him. Im hoping to get over and look at it again this weekend.
