hello all,

I have just purchased my first ever boat. 1989 17' quantum bass boat with a 5ohp ob motor. here is a pic of it http://survivorspantry.com/me-boat.jpg

I do have a few questions if I may.

1. how do i test the motor out of water, i live in the desert.
2. i noticed the deck cover which looks like felt is torn up, what would be the best replacement? marine carpet, rino lining? I am concerned about wieght and such.
3. what are things I should look for in damage aside from cosmetics?
4. I am going to replace the deck area where the pole seats go (the plywood). Do I need to put a water proof coating on the plywood?

I hope this is not to many questions for my first post. I am making this my winter project to get the boat ready for some fishing this coming summer. any suggestions would be wecome.

First, welcome to iboats.

1. how do i test the motor out of water, i live in the desert.

- (engine flusher - http://www.iboats.com/Seasense_Univ...23575102--**********.331579119--view_id.56096)

2. i noticed the deck cover which looks like felt is torn up, what would be the best replacement? marine carpet, rino lining? I am concerned about wieght and such.

- any outdoor carpet, with a backing, glue down with appropriate adhesives. You can get this all at Home Depot, etc

3. what are things I should look for in damage aside from cosmetics?

- Lots of things to look for here. Start with the deck, stringers, and transom to ensure it's all in good shape (search the forums in the restoration threads and you'll find out how to check stringers and transoms, etc)

4. I am going to replace the deck area where the pole seats go (the plywood). Do I need to put a water proof coating on the plywood?

- use marine grade plywood. No extra coating should be required if you're carpeting it.

- Ask away. That's what everyone is here for. To learn and offer help and share their experiences. Good luck with the project

If you decide to do engine work, post in the proper engine thread and there are a ton of experts on your brand of motor (Force outboard?)

Re: new here, new boat owner, new project

thanks so much for the fast reply!

I am going to take some pics and post them so i can get some educated thoughts. I will do it this evening.

ok, here are the pics. 15 of them

the transum looks in tact and not rotted. although i did see an area new the bow in the plastic lined storage. rusty and some cracks.

please take a look and tell me if you see anything that causes concern or any thoughts you might have.
