hi to all, I stumbled upon this site, and found losts of great info. but I still have a few questions. I have an older mercruiser 3.0 some time around 1990 maybe 91 or 89 not sure. anyhow, I think I maybe be having oil pressure problem, becuase my oil guage jumps around, erraticly, at idle it's still but have you give it gas it begins to jump, I understand it should move slowy in realationship with rpms, but thats not what it't doing, and it always seems to stay close to 40. also my oil level seems fine when cold but after the engine warms up, it seems low. how many quarts is this engine suppose to have.. one other reason I think there is a problem, is becuase I hear a really load rapping noise occasionally, mostly at low rpms ( under 3000) but it does come and go it's really really load, loader than a lift rod or push rod. and it sound like it is commign from the lower lefthand side near the transome, almost seems like it is comming formthe alternator. that is if your looking at the motor from inside the boat... I'm puzzeled. any idea as to what might be going on here? any help will be greatly appreciated

Re: new here please help.

Boatnbob, the oil pressure guage problem sounds like a loose wire, especially since it reads steady at idle, when you rev it the engine torque twists and indicates a possibility of a loose wire on the engine oil pressure sending unit. If this doesn't solve the problem the best way to check the actual oil pressure is with a mechanical guage. The rapping sound could be anything, to eliminate the alternator, water punp, etc remove the fan belt and start the engine, you'll be amazed how much quieter they run without all that junk spinning. Good luck.

thanks Slowly sinking. one more question,, I have read on here that sometimes flapper valves make a rapping noise, I'm not suer what that is or where it's at, but would it seem to come from that area?

Sounds alot liek mine, except the oil pressure dance. I think the flapper valve is in the transome mount, I could be wrong, but that is where my sound comes from.

I think the flapper is located near the bottom of the engine, certainly on the alternator side.

so how many qwuarts of oil are suppose to be in this thing?, remember when I check my 1990 3.0's oil when its at running temp, itseems to be too low, but when cold, it seems to be full.
