Just found this forum. Already got good info, found a manual link. Just bought a 1984 Bayliner Cherokee, 21' with a Volvo Penta AQ125. Running rough. Removed carb top and everythings' black, will start there. Where are tuneup parts available and if at auto parts store what engine do you tell them you have?

Ok, thought I had a AQ 125 with 270 outdrive. But now see it's a 280 outdrive. The motor has overhead cams as I can see them when I remove the oil cap. What do I have?

Re: New here

Welcome.

You can get parts at napa, aq125 should give them enough info. They can get all the sierra Marine parts you want. Iboats sells Sierra stuff cheaper however.

Good luck!

Re: New here

If it's got more than one cam it's not a 125

Re: New here

I do believe I found it. It's an AQ145A/280. Took some time on the Volvo site but think I have it. Tag is missing from motor.

Re: New here

The only "red" Volvo engine with more than one cam (part from V6s and V8s) is the AQ171A and C (also marketed later under the 251 DOHC/SP moniker). That engine has a different top, DOHC, electronic ignition, and a VERY expensive exhaust manifold...

The difference between the 125A and the 125B engine is the combustion volume. "A" is 2.1 liter (B21 block), and "B" is 2.3 liter (B230 block). You should be able to see which one it is by looking on the casting on starboard side of the block.

If I remember correctly, the stroke is identical on the "A" and "B" engine while the bore is slightly larger on the "B" to achieve the larger volume. The 151 and 171 has a longer stroke via a different crank shaft.

Re: New here

My head is spinning. 2 days and I finally have my answer. Thanks to Wellcraft19 I found the number on the block, B230. Then I found the tag by the starter, covered in grease. It said AQ131D. 230 was the new name for the AQ131s. So it appears that in the 90's the motor was switched out and possibly the lower unit. Just printed out the shop manual, thanks to Don S.
