I own an 1995 Wellcraft Excel 21 SL and I bought it as a project.
Unfortunately the last owner lost his key to the ignition
so I will need a new one. I saw that iboats had ignition keys
for sale, can anyone tell me which of those fits my boat?

What motor do you have? Typically, engine manufacturers only make a limited amount of different keyswitchs. Thus, you're only looking at a dozen to 20 different keys. Seeing as your either Mercruiser or Volvo, contact a dealer and he can get you the key.

You might have to bring the boat to them to let them go through their "little treasure trove" of keys, but they'll find the match...may even give you that key, if they're cool...:)

I couldn't tell you which one would work for you, but 2 years ago I took my boat up to lake Eri and left my key's home a friend of mine is a locksmith (I was from the area then moved) He came out with blanks, found one that fit the grooves and wiggled it then pulled it out and hit it with a file, he done that 5 times and then it worked. when i got home and compared it to the original it was only a few thousandths difference, Mike is one of the best though. don't know if anyone in your area has them skills. Might be since it is a project easier to change the ignition.

Check the area around the key hole. There is usually a letter code there. That code will get you a new key at the dealer.

When I bought my last boat went to check it out it had not been run for many years. The p.o. were no longer around the keys in the boat would not work plus I drove 220 miles to check it out so I went to napa and bought a new marine switch with two new keys for 20 some dollars....

Thank you for the help guys!:) Yes, I know that I can buy a new switch. I saw that iboats are selling switch+keys. Can I just take any switch or does my engine (Mercruiser) require a different switch+key?

Just pull your switch out and take it to napa or any place that sells marine switches and match the number of post that yours has. That way you have a new switch and keys, plus hide your extra key on the boat where you will remember where it is. So you will never be without a key....:)
