I installed the new impeller, 120 force yr87, in idle the discharge of water from engine looks good, at full throttle it appears the discharge just pours out or gulps out, I thought it should be more forceful (a jet stream). Would the thermostat have anything to do with this part of the water discharge? Plse adv your thoughts. it has not overheated since I replaced unit, but a little concerned and have only used twice. adv

i have a 1998 force 120 you should have more watercoming out of pee hole at higher rpm's.thermostat might be worth replacing.mine has a water pressure gauge.that was well worth installing.has about 5 psi a idle and about 15 at higher rpm's.i got tired of looking back to see if water was coming out of pee hole.kind of hard to tell with wind blowing hope this helps.

I agree with the water pressure gauge, however I don't think a '87 force 120 has a pee hole(at least our '88 125 doesn't) it just sprays(more like spits) a mist of water out the exhaust relief hole in the lower leg, it does spray more water as the rpm increases. hope this helps. Dave

on an 87 the "pee hole" is the two holes on the rear of the leg. water will not "pee" out in a stream. it is mixed with exhaust gases and is more sprayed out of the two holes at idle, at speed it comes out of exhaust snout below anti-cav plate

I like the idea of water pressure gauge to save looking back all the time. Can you guys tell me how I would go about doing this on a Force 90hp 1991?

Just my opinion. Having a water pressure gauge is nice, but having a properly working heat alarm is extremely important. If you replaced the impeller and the engine is putting out a healthy spray at idle, then things are as they should be. If your engine gets hot and the alarm doesn't sound, then your goose is cooked (literally). Having been through that before, I now check my alarm religously.

do you have access to one of those laser temp guns?take out and drive them pull off motor cover to see how hot each cylinder is if not do the hand thing if you cant touch for a sec.then its to hot.mine temp runs on a hot day and running the motor hard the motor got to about 125 degrees.i just put my water pressure guage where the pee hole fitting was thats just pipe thread i just bought a oil pressure gauge.i hope this helps my hot alarm does work.

Re: new impeller installed- water output question

I have just bought a boat with an '87 (US Marine) 125 and am in process of changing the impeller now. Having dismantled the water pump the old impeller looks in really good shape, but the motor was not visibly squirting coolant out of the two holes in rear of the motor leg. That said, it hasn't overheated during the two times I had it out on the water. I was assuming that the coolant was exiting from the exhaust snout... is that a dangerous assumption?
Also I absolutely cannot find an allen key that fits the drain plug! Any advice? I ended up yanking out the lower unit, inverting it and draining the old gunk out of the fill/vent holes. What a pain in the caboose! My 125 also is a little smokey at idle low revs - I'm guessing that's pretty normal for an old two-stroke. It seems to clear up when I give it some wellie (just like my old Yamaha motorbike).
Great forum, by the way. All this is new to me, so I'm learning a lot from you guys.

After installing a new impeller in my 92 Force 150 the water sprays out of the 2 tell tails on the leg with a good amount of flow even at idle. Under way I would estimate it sprays a good 2 1/2' in back of the motor. Lots of flow and runs cooler than it ever did.

Larry

Matt Harper, welcome to iboats.

In the future, click the "post new topic" when posting your problem/question. That will start a new thread, and you will get a better response to your question.

yes that is a dangerous assuption. The motor is new to you, and you don't have any idea how old or in what condition the impeller is in.

Looks can be deceiving. Replace it, then you will know, and should be able to count on it for 2-3 years.

As for the drain plug, maybe someone replaced it with a non standard plug. Best to get it out, and replace it with the plug that belongs there. It gonna be impossible to fill with new lube the way it is anyway.

With fresh gas and properly mixed oil, and properly adjusted carbs, your motor will smoke less. Clean out the gas tank and start fresh.
Using a full synthetic oil will help too. It helps alot on some motors.

Probably time to do some maintenance like a decarb, also.

Re: new impeller installed- water output question

Hi Roscoe
Many thanks for your response and guidance - I was a little worried about starting yet another Force Impeller thread - just not sure of forum protocol yet!
I'm replacing the impeller with a Sierra/OEM part. It seems a little heavier than the original, but is exactly the same size and shape. West Marine say the bright metal plate that the impeller sits on is no longer available, but mine seems in very good condition. Likewise, they couldn't supply the gasket, so I was going to use a gasket compound - will this be OK do you think?
Nobody seems to be able to tell me what causes the coolant to be ejected through the '****-holes'. If I run water into the motor through the holes, it exits through the exhaust - same if I direct the hose through the thermostat housing. Q. Does the thermostat have to be open to direct the coolant out of the motor leg?
I want to get out on the lake again this weekend, but I'm kinda anxious about cooking my 125....

Just to update - impeller changed - everything cool in the cooling dept! Now has a steady stream of coolant from the motor leg ports.
De-coke next.....

Re: new impeller installed- water output question

Good job.

FYI, the cooling water just flies out the holes while passing by, on its way to the exhaust outlet.
