New impeller not pumping water.

I have a 1983 Volvo penta AQ125A. The other day I noticed my exhaust smoking in engine compartment and realized my impeller wasn't working. So I pulled it out and the bearing had became dislodged from the rubber. So I ordered a new one, installed it tonight and now I have no water in the system. I pulled the impeller housing off engine and turned motor to see if the shaft were the fork goes is turning and it is. Reinstalled and it isn't pulling from the tub of water the out drive is in. I lightly sanded the impeller housing to get all the old impeller and water residue off. When I pulled off the old one there was water in there but may have been old. This boat is new to me of about 3 weeks. Wondering where to start? Thanks for advice!

The impeller WILL NOT pull water from a tub. You need to have the entire drive submerged for the pump to prime or have the muffs that hook to the hose.

I had muffs on before the tub and it wouldn't pull. So I thought maybe a tub to submerge the whole drive would work better and it did not. I can feel any suction from the out drive.

When you had the muffs on, did you have the water pressure turned all the way up? there is about 2' of pump rise that needs the boat sitting in the water to overcome. as gbeltran indicated, the pump will not suck up from a tub. when on the muffs, have needed to either hold the muffs to prime the raw water pump, or to duct tape the muffs to fit as the VP water inlet is not as muff friendly as other brands.

Ok, I'm tracking now. No I didn't have it all the way up. I just turned it on thinking it would draw from as a vaccum. I will give that a shot when I get home. Thanks both of you very much!
