Re: new lounge seat

Hi tengals123,

If I were to build a bench style lounge seat that would rest against the splashwell I would start with 1/2 pressure treated plywood and some corrigated cardboard. Use the cardboard to make the seat profile (as viewed from end of seat). Should be a box shape base with an angled back, sort of like the lower case letter "h". Cut 3 to 4 of these from the plywood. They act as the ribs and internal support for the seat and back. They are spaced out evenly across the back of the boat, and plywood across the front and rear enclose it. Galvanized or Stainless screws and epoxy to assemble. Marine vinyl can be attached to the base, sides and any of the back that is visable. Use contact adheasive, no padding needed here. Then cut and fit pieces for the seat and back that are to be covered with foam and vinyl. Think of hinging the seat bottom so the base can be used for storage.

I suggest a trip to the library to look at upholstry books. Lots of pictures of various techniques. Some of the Tuck & Roll style padding can be done with only a staple gun.

Also search this forum because a few of the guys have done their own upholstry and it looks great.

Hope you find my suggestions helpful.

Good Luck!
Mark.

EDIT:

One thing to think about is how comfortable will it be to sit there while the boat is running, due to the roar of the motor. One's head may only be a foot or two from the o/b.

Re: new lounge seat

Hi Tengals,

I have a similar boat, except an IO. I was considering the same thing for my boat and then two swivel chairs up front. My concern is the weight distribution. Two people sitting back there and the weight of the bench, you could be adding 400 LBs or so with a strong rear-bias.

My boat originally came with two back to backs for seating for four. My plan is to do my seats last, take a few friends out on the boat and position them in different areas to see how it handles cruising speeds, time to plane etc. And then this info will help me determine the best seating arrangement

Re: new lounge seat

I have a 69 MFG Westfield Regal. I built two bench seats on either side, I used a pair of storage boxes from wallmart-about $15 each, encased them in pressure tretaed ply and injected expanding foam into the gaps, then upholtered them. For a seat I screwed a sheet of ply, painted and attached two throwable seat cushiosn with velcro, in between these cusions is some rubber tread for stepping in and out..you can sort of see them at www.phtobucket.com go to Av8rTX My Boat

TexomaAv8r,

I thought I recognized that photo of the boat beached. Thats the one you posted on MFGBOATS. Haven't seen you post there in a while.

Good to see your boat is used regularly. I thought that was a great idea to use the Wallmart storage boxes in the seats.

Mark.
