Hello All,

My name is Sam (raise in St. Louis) so I spent the early years fishing Lake Carlyle in ILL. Been in San Diego since 87 and been looking at boats for the past year. YES it took me a year to FINALLY decide on what I wanted:

* used
* no later than 1990
* in great condition
* garage stored
* must fix inside my 20' garage
* open bow
* seats 7 to 8
* inboard/outboard
* planned usage 90% fresh 10% bay salt water (san diego bay cruising)
* price < $6000

So I found this SeaSwirl for 5.5k...and checking it out this Saturday!
What do you guys think?? Schedule a sea trial or just pay cash and take it home???

1996 Seaswirl 180 OMC inboard/outboard with Volvo Penta 145 HP motor and Volvo Penta Cobra SX outdrive. Length is 18' 6" and the boat can seat 7 people comfortably. THE BOAT IS IN PRISTINE CONDITION. The motor runs strong at 165-170 psi. in all cylinders, tuned up with the Holly carburetor running smooth and idleing perfectly. The outdrive is freshly maintained and ready to go. All systems have been completely checked, recently maintained and repaired including the water pump, impeller, bilge pump, bait tank pump and blower. All gages, lighting, fish/depth finder, steering, throttle and shifter cables work perfectly.

The boat does 40 mph with 3 adults and 2 children aboard and can pull a 200 lb. man "out of the hole" waterskiing. Wakeboarding and tubing are a breeze and the large, full-width swim step at the stern makes getting in and out of the boat safe and easy. The boat includes a custom bait tank that mounts on the rear swim step with a circulation pump operating at 500 gal/hr.

This is a great looking boat. The hull is in excellent condition. The upholstery, carpet, dashboard and trim are in like-new condition with no tears, scratches, fading or rust. The boat has been stored inside or under cover at all times and we are the 2nd owner. The seating includes a large, fully adjustable Captain's chair, a double seat for the co-pilot, 2 seats in the rear and room for 2 up in the bow. The rear seats can be elevated creating a large sun pad over the full width of the boat. A full-size bimini top is included as well as an anchor, 4 lifevests, towable tube, water skiis, ski rope, dock line, 2 fenders and fire extinguisher. The trailer is metal with great tires, bearings and bearing buddies. It has a break-away hitch/tongue which shortens the trailer by 2 feet for fitting in the garage. The winch and jack are new and the rust on the trailer is minor. The boat has been in east county most of it's life and has been almost exclusively a lake and river boat.

Everything on this boat works the way it is supposed to and we maintained and repaired this boat to keep it long term. But plans change and now we have to sell.

Thanks,
Sam

Re: NEW MEMBER!! About to part with $$$$ but what you think???

This is the part I don't like: 180 OMC inboard/outboard with Volvo Penta 145 HP motor and Volvo Penta Cobra SX outdrive.

Someone else can pop in to go into greater detail, but the words OMC and Cobra mean: Run away.

Not supported. Not made. Outdated.

Someone is playing games with the terminology, because Mercruiser Alpha and Bravo, along with Volvo are current and supported.

96 was the joint venture between OMC and Volvo Penta.

I've got a 95 OMC that has Volvo Penta stickers all over it. When I buy parts, they sometimes come from OMC and sometimes come from VP. Everything is identical, so it really doesn't matter which ones they send.

Take it for a ride....get the owner to show you EVERY system and verify for yourself that they work as intended.

Run it at idle, mid range and wide open.
Shift forward and reverse.....apply some throttle in reverse.
Lift up seats, the motor cover, in hatches and holds.
Stick your head in the bilge as far as you can.
Wiggle drive belts...
Wipe the bilge with a rag.....see what comes up.
Open the lower unit lube drain plug and let out a small amount of lube.
Trim/tilt in good working order.
Oil dipstick....pull it out...check the level and the color of the oil.

Only YOU can make the call if this boat is in your future.
Internet forum users can only offer up opinions and ideas gleened from thousands of collective years of experience.

Good luck to you...

Cobra SXs are OK.

The drive was deffnitely built during the joint venture years between OMC and Volvo Penta.

There really shouldn't be too much of an issue with parts and service.

Call your local Volvo dealer and give him the engine #'s and outdrive and make sure they still support it. If they do and the boat is in the condition you say it it is with all the stuff, I honestly believe that's about right for a boat like that in excellent shape. My .02.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Saw the boat today and it looked really clean...then I read this thread:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=395934

Man on man...decisions and choices.
I wonder what our wives would say if they knew how we chose them? HAHAHAHAHAA!!

I have an 85 CJ7 Rock Crawler and do my own work on it. I would love to drop coin on a JK with Dana 60's and 39" tires...but that's not my Jeepin style..so I will apply the same rule to boating.

I also drive a F150 5.4 Super Crew as my daily driver and the gas cost way more than a 4 cyl car LOL!!

As for boats:
- 3.x will do what I plan on doing with better gas mileage
- 4.x will do it better :)
- 5.x will do it way better GGRRRRR!!! no power if I decide to use it..but at twice the cost of the 3.x

But for my 1st boat and a baby still in the oven (due Nov)...i think 3.0 will be good for the next 5 to 7 years.

BTW: iBoat Rocks

When you get close to the model you might get, I'd put down a deposit contingent on having a local boat surveyor do a once over. Anything repairs he finds can come off the price. Cheap insurance.

We debate about this over & over. :D
Theres nothing to worry about with owning a boat with a Cobra outdrive.

You still can get ALL the parts you'll ever need for them. :)

Now if it was a King Cobra your screwed !!.Finding parts for them is like finding hens teeth. :eek:

Re: NEW MEMBER!! About to part with $$$$ but what you think???

had sea trials in San Diego bay today...

- boat started right up
- owner hit WOT then cruised back in to pick up my buddy (former boat owner and I)
- cruised back out....
------- 10 MPH at WOT :(
------- 0 RPMs :(
------- 0 Temp Reading :(
------- Engine never stalled :)
------- Engine sounded like it was missing a little

Pulled boat out of water (engine off or course)
and the temp gage shot up to 180.

I'm thinking:
- engine side fuel delivery problem??
- stuck open thermostat (ocean was cold today)??
- throttle cable out of adjustment?
- ??????????

Owner will have his guy check, fix then schedule another sea trial before I buy the boat.

My "guy: gut (not full of beer) feeling" says this is a good buy...with a few bumps along the way..

What are your thoughts???

Thanks,
Sam

If the owner is willing to make things right.
I'd go for it after the sea trial if you really like the boat. :)
What I did was beat the crap out of my boat at the sea trial.
I thought the owner was going to have a heart attack. He looked at me like I was retarded. :D

Its going on 4yrs with my OMC / Cobra girls with no breakdowns. :).

UPDATE!!!

I told the owner the carb was flooding but I did not give him the $500 deposit that he wanted to hold the boat. I took the boat acting up as a sign to walk away. So he had the carb rebuilt yesterday, but
I purchased MY FIRST BOAT this morning :)
