hey all, im new to this site and to boating for that matter. i was thinking about buying a motor for my 70something 14' jon. im looking at a 57 evinrude 18hp fastwin with fuel tank. dude wants 150 for it. is that a reasonable price for one you think? also i picked up a 55 johnson 5.5 seahorse for 70 bucks just to toy with, was this a good deal? thanks for your help.

Evenin'

Wouldn't say it was a bad price if it is elec. start on the 18 hp and all is well. Kind of high on the 5.5. Has babbit bearings. Good motors tho. Anybody with you that can determine that all is well, or are you on your own? Lots to check on, but if it runs good get it, it is cheap enough to learn the ins/outs of mechanics of basic outboards; fun if you are in to tinkering w/old mechanicals and boating in general. Don't expect it to run like the newer motors that are designed now to run on whatever they call our petroleum products now!! Sure ain't gasoline!!

Re: new member looking for some advise

well my room mate and i have worked on a 54 seahorse 10hp. and a 56 15hp evinrude fastwin that we found in his dads barn they had sat for over 10 years. we just replaced the coils both and after alot of pulling got them both running. we also didnt have a dual line tank so we put an air fitting on a single line tank and ran it straight to the air supply. i didnt think it would work but it did and was cheaper than finding and buying a dual line tank, or a fuel pump. the evinrude 18hp is not an electric start and i am told that it had new coils and carb kit installed before it was put away a few years ago but had always ran, and comes with original manual, and tank. which i would like to have the tank to also use on my 5.5 so maybe 150 is too high if its not running? i dont think it would take much to get it going, but dont want to find out its not pumping water or something.

I'm new to these also but have a '59 5.5 I've had to replace the coils, pionts condensers plugs water pump impeller and rebuilt the carb. Its fun to play with and found a 2 line tank on craigslist. The profile pic is my motor.

Buck and a half for a motor with a tank is good price if it's in running condition. At the very least you should consider new points and coils ( if cracked) carb kit and resealing the gearcase. Talk to Butch at Putnam's, he has a good supply of parts for older Johnson/Evinrude motors.

I'd stick to the warm water arm if the wind is up as the main channel gets pretty rough.

The 66 Johnson is my workhose. All the others are good runners and get used as much as possible.
