Hi folks! New member here! I have owned an 18' 1974 Starcraft open bow outboard for about six years which I have been slowly restoring (though it didn't need much) and it's pretty much finished and just last week fell into one of those rare barn finds. Saw an ad on C. L. that said "old boat for sale" so me being a softie for old stuff I just had to check it out. Called the man and was told it was a 20 ft. Starcraft that was just taking up space in the back of his garage and wanted it out. For $500 I figured what the heck I'll take a road trip... Well the garage was the size of a warehouse (I'm jealous) and it ended up being an 18' inboard/outboard (he measured from the bow to the prop to get 20 ft). He had owned it since 1972 to go salmon fishing with but got too busy raising a family and the boat got ignored. Once his kids grew up to adults they would take it to one of the local lakes once a year or so to ski but about 12 years ago it was left outside one winter and snow collapsed the top and apparently got enough condensation in the fuel tank for it to not want to start any more. So it sat for another 12 years tucked away in the corner of his garage/warehouse where it collected about a 1/4" of grunge on it. Well the first thing I noticed was the hull was in near perfect shape, the floor/deck was solid and the motor turned over by hand and it had a hella stout trailer under it (a Dilly???) so I gave the man $500 cash and spent the next 2 hours moving crap out of the way so I could get it out of the garage/warehouse. Once I got it home I found a cracked exhaust riser which I replaced, the fuel tank was rusted through and the fuel pump was toast and the carb was in dire need of rebuilding so I got a new fuel pump, rebuilt the carb and am still looking for a fuel tank but I changed the oil/filter with Mobil 1 synthetic and a Bosch oil filter and installed a fumoto oil drain valve and hose so I can drain the oil through the drain plug on the transom. used a portable fuel tank from an outboard and she fires up and runs like a swiss watch. The little 120hp Mercruiser has such low hours that if you shine a flashlight in the oil filler cap everything still looks shiny like new! Next I changed the lower oil and all I can do for now is hope that it's fine as well. I did have problems getting it to start as the coil negative was getting grounded out by two brown wires attached to it. I'm assuming those are for the neutral safety switch and something else??? I had to disconnect them to get it to run so I'll have to figure that out later.
Since this is my first I/O I have some questions:
1. On the dash I have 3 buttons for the tilt/trim. The top one says UP/Trailer (this one doesn't work). The middle one says UP/Out (this one doesn't work either) and the bottom one says IN/down (this one works I think). Now I understand the UP and DOWN part but what is the IN and OUT supposed to do?
2. I found two brass plugs on the intake manifold (one 1/8" and one 1/4") and figured out they must be for winterizing the exhaust manifold (1/8") and block(1/4") but are there other things I need to winterize and how?
3. Is there a source somewhere for me to download a copy of the owners manual for this thing?
4. Are there other things I need to look for or should know about that's unique to I/O's?
Thanks and Love this web site!
