Hello, I recently purchased a 1972 Mercury 65 hp 650 3cyl outboard with MerControls. I was told this motor had tilt/trim. I am not familiar with the tilt/trim unit and not sure what I'm looking for. Also, I do not find a tilt/trim switch located anywhere on the MerControls.

My other question is, I've figured out where all the controls mount on the motor. However, on the MerCotnrol, on the opposite side where the key goes, there are 3 wires that come off that have been cut. The three wires are White, Black and Grey. Does anyone know what these three wires are for? Are they for the tilt/trim unit?

One last thing and this might be a stupid question. On my old Johnson motor there was a lever that would lock the motor in either the Up or Down position. This new motor has two large hydraulic arms. When I lift the motor up I do not see a way to lock it in the up position. And when it's down I do not find a way to lock it in position. I'm I missing something or just being stupid?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The Jungle Cruise :D

Re: New Mercury Owner Questions

The three wires at the control are more than likely for the tach. gray to sending, white is power and black is ground. On your motor are the two rams like a shock or do you have two connections for hoses on them. I dont beleive that Merc started putting TnT on that year 650. If so it is a separate system and the TnT is a in the boat pump with separate harness and switch not on the control. If your motor has just the shock assist type rams there should be a tilt/trailering lever under and behind the tilt tube that you can raise to hold the motor up. You really need to get a manual on this motor see the links for manuals on iboats at bottom of page.

Ok, thanks for the info. I have ordered a manual and should have it shortly. I will also take some pics of the motor when I get home tonight and post them here for you all to take a look at.

Thanks,

Mike

Well, I got the pictures put didn't get a chance to get them posted at my site last night.

I did find out that I do not have TnT. I guess my question is still about locking the motor in position. I fooled around with it some more last night but still did not find a way to lock it in the up or down position.

Also, another question is... Is it possible to buy a TnT for this motor? If so, what should I look for?

Thanks,

The Jungle Cruise

Jungle,

I have the same motor (different year 1977?) On my unit there is a gravity catch with a L shaped bracket on either side of the motor that when you lift the motor this peice is supposed to swivel down and keep the motor in the elevated position. Mine has no other lever so reaching in to flip it back to the down position could be a real finger pincher.

Yeah, that is what I saw also, but couldn't get the things to swivel down properly. Seems like a pretty poor design. I guess the only other alternative is to get a TnT installed on it.

The Jungle Cruise

I have a 74 model and it does have TnT, if yours does, look for 2 hoses on each side of the motor, they will go to the pump, and there will be a black wire off the side of the motor, that is the tilt sensor wire or limiter. The trim switch will not be on the controls, it will be on a plate that has three rubber buttons about the size of nickels. The top on is trim up bottom one is trim down. Hold the top one and the middle one to tilt all the way up. The wires leading to this switch will be 3 bonded wires that are purple blue and a greenish color.

The three wires that you speak of are the tach leads.

Grey-tach sender
black-ground
white-hot,power
