Just bought an 1850 Crestliner Sportfish it has a Minnkota 80US. Out on Greenwood Lake this morning with about a 10 - 14 MPH wind. I could not troll against the wind.

I looked at the prop and it seemed to be spinning slow, about 100 RPM with the control on continuous and at full (100).

Charging the batteries now (two Optima rigged for 24v by dealer). I just got the boat Thursday and used the troll moter about 10 minutes during the sea trial. Could it be the batteries?

Were the batteries charged before you went out? If not, you have no idea what state of charge the batteries were in. Does that motor have a battery condition indicator on it? If so, see what it says with the motor running at its fastest setting.

Re: New Minnkota 80US

I ASSUMED they were charged! Motor does not have a battery condition indicator. Guess I better install one

Dealer said if batts get low charge overnight. I have a built in (Dual Pro) Charger wich charges the two Optima Batts.

Does it sound like the batteries were low to you?

Should 80lbs thrust move an 18ft aluminum boat aginst a 14mph wind?

Re: New Minnkota 80US

I have a 55 MinnKota on a 17 foot Alumacraft and it definitely will handle 14 MPH wind and a 4 MPH river current at the same time.
