Hello all. I just purchased a 65 hp Merc long shaft for my 19' pontoon boat. This motor is replacing a 25 hp Johnson short shaft.

My question is, where should the cavitation plate site? I've read allot on this forum and many people say it should sit level with the bottom of my boat. Does this mean the bottom of my pontoons?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Hopefully someone who can better inform you will be along soon but till then, the cavitation plate level with the bottom of the boat is good advice for conventional boats. Pontoons are prone to cavitate therfore I do not known what the rule of thumb is. My cavitation plate sets level with the bottom of the toons.

I would think, that any craft without a planing hull, it should not matter how deep the prop is in the water, for the exception that it should not be too shallow. The pontoon does not have a planing hull, although I have a neighbor with a pontoon I/O with a 350 engine, and he does go up the lake with the logs on plane. :D :D :D
