I just acquired a new ( new to me) outboard- a 1996 50 hp 2 stroke Johnson (ser# G0398708). Is that motor protected by a circuit breaker? Accessories (except for guages) draw from a separate battery. Do I need a main circuit breaker on each battery? The accessories battery has a fuse panel with each accessory individually fused and the combined amps there is 25) If so what size and type would you recommend for each?

Thank you.

Re: New motor question

There is a 20 amp fuse under the engine cover. Each individual circuit requjrs a fuse rated for the total of items on that circuit, or for the wire size. Never install a fuse larger than ampacity of the wire.

Re: New motor question

The battery cables going to your motor from the battery are not fused. The fuses on the motor are only for the ignition and gauges.
Other boat accessories (nav lights, bilge pump, electronics, etc.) should be wired from the battery, and not from your motor.

Re: New motor question

There should be a fuse or circuit breaker within a foot of the battery on the positive lead to the fuse panel.

That fuse has nothing to do with the engine. That protects the feed to the helm and all accessories EXCEPT the instruments and the engine.

He asked about circuit protection needs for BOTH batteries.

He also said the engine is the only thing on the starting battery. Ever seen a couple hundred amp breaker in a battery cable on a boat. It is not needed.

Re: New motor question

I was addressing the house battery, not the starting battery.
