new nissen 4 stroke hard to start

Hi, I purchased a new Nissen 9.8 4 stroke engine in November 2008 and have about 20 hours on it for break-in etc. I find it very hard to start and the owner's manual states a very strange way to start this engine. It is a manual rope start. It requires a steady pull thru two compressions and then with the rope extended about 3 feet, a pull about about 6 -12 inches starts the engine. If these user manual instructions are exactly followed it starts fine on first try and runs fine Stoping the engine and in then restarting in the re-start throttle position starts fine also. But deviate any from this starting proceedure and the engine will not start unless the throttle is 1/4 or more opened. this engine is wearing me out because I do a lot of short drifts in running tides with the engine off and then restart it to repeat drifts. Many times I run aground, or worse, because of this slow lengthy finicky starting proceedure. When the engine does start, it idles fine and runs smooth over the throttle range. Can anyone tell me how this starting can be remedied? It is too finicky. Seems like I would not be the only one complaining or questioning this starting proceedure? Thanks for any suggestions or confirmations. Don

I just looked at the owner's manual that is on-line on the nissan website for 9.8 4-stroke and I don't see the procedure you're describing. Under section 5 (Engine operation), page 14 it says to pull the starter rope slowly until you feel it engage, then pull it quickly to start the engine.

It should start on the first or second pull.

I completely agree with TGuy. My 9.8 EP (electric start) will fire on the first or second pull every time, if I choose to rope-start instead of using the electric. Even after sitting for a week or two without being run.

"Proper" choking when cold is important. My carb seems a wee bit on the lean side, possibly a characteristic of running E-10 fuel. So I do apply some start-up choke (briefly) except when warm restarting. Too much throttle will require more choke to get it to fire on the first pull -- and then you have a racing (over 2,500 RPM) condition. I find that opening the throttle just to the "restart" point works best for most starting conditions, and the motor pops up to about 1,500 for the first minute or so when cold starting.

thanks for the help, ok on the manual start--I am quite sure now that my starting problems must be related to some other problem perhaps a carb problem --I am going to have the 20 hour servicing and will mention this starting problem--will post the feedback---Don

Doesn't sound right to me at all. I'd get it checked. I guess I would also add that if your doing allot of short drifts, you might price adding a electric start.
