Personally, I would go with Mercury/Mariner. "If it ain't big, black and hanging off th e back. What's the point of putting it in the water?"

Just my thoughts.

Craig

Hello.
I guess this is asking for a personal opinion.
I do not know the brand name. But I would buy an engine that I can fix on the water if needed. One where I can take off the cowling and put a rope around something to start it that way.High tech is great, but I want to be able to fall back on low tech that works.Just in case something high tech goes haywire five miles off shore and those dark clouds are gathering.I guess I would get a mid eighties OMC.
I hate to play with the life of my ten year old who is with me in the boat and that is what motivates my reasoning.

Surf the web for the major outboard manufactures. Investigate to see who offers the 75hp you say you want. Compare the features, cost and reputations.
Do a search on this site under outboard repairs for the brand(s) your considering. For instance, a quick glance tells you Force is a hurtin' unit.
Look in your local yellow pages, see if the brand your still considering is local. If there is more then one dealer, or several, in your local area selling the brand your considering, this is an extra bonus.
Set up a lawchair at a busy boat ramp this weekend and compare the starts, smoke, sounds, looks, performance and smoothness of the variety. This may be an excellent way to find the best local dealer by word of mouth.
As you can tell by this board, people like talking about their boats.

Re: new outboard for old boat

I bought a 2002 Yanaha 75 hp 2 cycle and had it out this week for the first time. I bought it because it is lighter than Merc, 2 year versus 1 year warranty and about $800 cheaper in this market. Also, the dealer put in a speedometer at no extra cost - in fact I didn't know he was doing it until I picked up the boat. The motor ran excellent, is quiet and I am very happy with it so far. :) :)

Why dont you put an 85 hp engine back on the boat? The extra 10 hp will help you out at some time.

On my new boat I have a 90hp suzuki 4 stroke, it is big black and goes like a bat out a hell.... I'd recommend that or a honda.. I'd go with the 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke.. a days coming when those 2 stroke motors are g oing to have to be recylced......

millerpdt,

There really aren't any truly bad brands out there.

As important as anything is the dealer you decide to do business with. Check the reputation of the dealer before you put down the $$$. Ask for referrals, if they don't have any, walk and try somewhere else.

If you can swing it, go four stroke.
