New outboard recommendations/advice?

Well, I was joking with the wife last night about spending thousands and buying a new engine to replace my '85 Merc. 150 with scoring in no. 2 and some stripped spark plug threads. At least I was joking until she says OK. I asked if she was serious and she then proceeded to argue her point!!!

I am still contemplating rebuilding the powerhead myself but I get discouraged the more and more information I get. Seems like to do a quality rebuild, I'm looking at at least $3000. I received an email from a gentlemen in FL that has a "new" 1999 Merc. 150 Saltwater (still in the box) up for $5900 (prior to negotiation). It's carb'ed, oil injected, nothing fancy, which is what I'm looking for. Proven technology. He apparently obtained it from a dealer who went under. Does anyone have any feedback, good or bad, on this engine?

Also, I noticed that Ed's Marine Superstore in VA is having a sale at the end of the month. Motors will be discounted but I'm not sure how much. New carb'ed 150 Merc. and Johnsons go for $6999, 150 Evinrude Ficht for $7499 and 150 carb'ed Yamaha for $7499. All this is prior to the sale. I sent them an email just to make sure these prices are for the 25" shaft that I need. Sure a four stroke or HPDI/Optimax would be nice but the wife isn't going to let me spend that much and frankly I don't think my time on the water is high enough to warrant the additional expense for the fuel/oil savings.

Now some questions. I know I'm going to get mixed opinions on all the different manufacturers. Please post good in addition to bad experiences you all have had with these various motors as well as the 1999 Merc. 150. I've had Evinrude, Yamaha and Merc. outboards and they all have performed very well for me. Personally, I'm not biased towards one manufacturer. I just want to get the best, most reliable engine for my $$$.

Currently with a 150 and 14x19 SS prop I top out at 41.5 mph (turning 5400) on the GPS and can cruise around 28 mph at 3600. So, I think 150 is plenty of power for me. The boat is a 20' Grady CC. I'd consider 175 if the price was VERY attractive but I don't think it's necessary.

Thanks for all of your help in making this decision.

Tight lines!!!

Brian

gw204,

It would be a toss up for me between the Ficht and the Yamaha.

The Bombardier built Fichts are fine. The smooth running and fuel/oil savings of the Ficht would be hard to pass up for the same price, and the warranty is the same.

Just my opinion.

Re: New outboard recommendations/advice?

gw204,
I was quoted on 6/24/02 - a 150HP 2001 Evinrude Ram Ficht 25" $6,499 by Ed's. BTW, that is an OMC built motor, not Bombardier. I was also told they couldn't ship 2002 engines to me.

Brian - Spend an hour or so at this site comparing reported problems with the brands you are considering. I suspect you will find your answer right here. And the winner is - -

Howard

The consensus in this part of the country [ Gulf of Mexico] is that Yamaha is now the No.1 convential OB. You do ,however, see more and more Mercury's on saltwater boats. I think everyone is still in a "wait and see" mode on Bombardier. Yamaha does carry a premium price.

Re: New outboard recommendations/advice?

Gw204,

The crappy Fichts Rod Knocking is referring to are the 1999 and previous year models. The 2000 or later models are good.

Buddy of mine at the lake has a 135 Ficht (2001) on his boat and it runs perfect. He's never had a problem with it. It will save you a ton of gas compared to the 2 str. carbed, and performance is not an issue, they are FAST !!, and remarkably quiet at certain cruising speeds. One downside...plugs and oil are a little expensive, and check-ups require a laptop computer.

NO Brainer----Ficht.

Re: New outboard recommendations/advice?

Hey GW204, Every Merc I have had, I have never had a problem. I just made sure I changed the leg oil and plugs, and all was fine. The last Merc I had was 110 or 115, can't remember the hp for sure. Anyways, that thing pulled my 20' like no tomorrow.
I like evinrude also, but I think I will always buy a Merc if I am buying a new one.
Happy boating
