New outdrive hard to shift

I purchased a new oem mercruiser alpha I gen II drive. The previous outdrive shifted into and out of gear very easily. There is considerably more resistance in the shifter going into and out of gear. A couple of times is was stiff enough to kill the engine by sticking the shift interrupter switch. I have used the drive only once. Is this an issue of the drive needing to "break in" before the shifting becomes smoother? I had the shifter cable replaced roughly 6 months ago. That coupled with the fact that the previous drive shifted into and out of gear smoothly eliminates the shifter cable as an issue.

Did the problem start right after you replaced the outdrive ? I've never heard of them needing a "break in" period up to the point of stalling the motor. Not sure, but you might have to re-adjust the linkage and also see if there's a kink in the cable somewhere.

I wonder if maybe the shift slide at the end of the cable is turned or binding. Might be time to pull the drive and take a look to see what is wrong.

While it's off, check and see how the shifter feels.

You might have to have someone keep the shift slide in the right position because they tend to fall one way or the other and jam going into reverse.
