Hi everyone, I recently bought a 1984 procraft 1750 with a 84 Mercury 200 black max. I tried the boat out for a week before I bought it and it ran great. My problem is I have no owners manual or service manual for this engine and was wanting to know what things of importance I should know about this engine. Things such as recommended fuel octane, oil type, things I should replace, etc. etc. Thanks for any info on this matter.

Hi Spring,

The Manual will explain everthing you need to know. The Seloc manual seems to be geared toward new boaters that do routine maintence. A factory Manual will go into further detail and be specific for your motor, while the generic ones like Seloc and Clymers will cover many different engines. I prefer the Factory Manual myself, but it may be to your advantage if you are new to the boating scene, to go with a generic. Some of the things you need to do is change and check the lower unit fluid once a year, run 87 octane with TC-W3 oil at a ratio of 50:1 mix. You need to change the water pump every other year or so. You should only need to replace the spark plugs once a year if the motor is running well. Grease any fittings that you find, especially around the tilt tube. Inspect the prop often for dings and such. These are just some of the things you need to do. The manual will cover the rest..

Mercury Factory Manual, Parts Manual and Owners Manual
