I just bought a 1985 bayliner 2850 contessa Sunbridge its in great shape but it's been in a slip for several years and never run much when I first got it and used it some and then noticed some water in hull around engine I've moved it to my house and plan on moving it to a new place but want to make sure to service the lower drive. I'm sure the bellows need to be changed. I've worked on anything from cars to heavy equipment but know nothing about boats but willing to learn and don't mind the work at all. Any suggestions?

When you change the bellows, you'll also get a look at the ujoints. If there has been water in the bellows, there is a chance the PDS bearings are bad, but start out by pulling the upper gear box.

Here's how.

If you find there is water in the outdrive oil, you may also want to pressure test the outdrive before disassembly. Depending on the previous maintenance, you may or may not be in for a mechanical adventure.;)

Welcome.

the 290 is pretty much a bullet proof drive. it does need maintenance.

since the boat has been sitting, pull the drive. you will need to do a bellows service anyway. if you find gear oil, or water in the u-joint bellows, have the u-joints replaced, the input shaft seal replaced as well. you will then need to check the PDS bearings

if all is dry in there, you are lucky.

have the drive pressure tested
