First off, yes I know that boats, much like most other things, are only worth as much as they're worth to the owner or the potential buyer. Having said that, I have a 76 Thompson 18' open bow. The bad is, the floor is completely rotten, so I'm assuming the stringers are as well. The previous owner put a couple sheets of ply over the existing floor, so you can stand on it right now without going through. The transom also shows signs of water damage, according to a couple core samples I took today. Also today, I noticed that the bow eye has pulled almost completely through, I think the outer fiberglass hull is the only thing holding it in. After having to cut it in half to remove it because the nuts were rusted so bad I couldn't get a socket to turn them, I found some pretty bad rot around where it bolted through the hull. The good is, the hull itself is in really good shape for it's age, and it runs like it's brand new. Mercruiser 120 4 cyl and pre-Alpha outdrive. I've already replaced the shift cable and impeller in the outdrive before I noticed just how bad the wood in the boat is. My question is, do you guys (and girls) think it's worth doing a complete restore/rebuild job over the winter? Or should I try to enjoy fishing with it this summer while keeping my eyes open for a decent hull that just needs an engine and outdrive? The boat doesn't hold any sentimental value or anything like that for me, I just like catfishing the Potomac with my brother-in-law. From what I've researched on the forums here, I could have upwards of $3k+ in this thing if I decide to rebuild. I do like the looks of it, but I'm not sure if it's worth that much to me. Just looking for some outside input. Thanks.

If you are as experienced as I am with these things (not at all), if your wood damage is as extensive as what you are describing be glad you haven't sunk yet.

My transom damage was so bad it's a wonder the motor didn't rip the boat in half last summer!

Don't risk it. Fix it. Besides, it'll be fun! And aside from the $$$, you'll have plenty of time spent too.

GPayne,

Welcome to the Iboats Dry Dock.

I'm no pro but started out more or less like you are right now. Post some pics..let's see what you have. If you are willing and eager to learn, there are a ton of folks on here that can steer you in the right direction. I consider myself handy, but have never touched fiberglass before. These guys had me convinced I could do it.....and you know what? I can! Not great at it, but I can get the job done.

As you stated in your post, it is really up to you....A lot of folks might think I am crazy for the time/effort/money going into my project....but you know what? I think it has been worth every second/penny. I worked most of the day today in a tyvek suit in 111+ weather...nearly 90% humidity....I loved every minute of it!.

What is great about doing this as a project, is there is no timeline you have to meet. No 20-30k up front to buy a boat. You can work as little or as often as you want. These guys will have you putting your boat back together better than when it was new. You can check out my thread in my signature to get an idea of what you have in store..

Regardless of the decision you make, good luck.

Welcome the the Dry Dock,

Ahh the often heard question, "is it worth it" The short answer is no it's not, but that's never stopped me or hundreds of others here.

The question you have to ask yourself is, "Is it worth it to me?" If you're looking at resale value then just junk it, because you'll never get out of what you'll have in it, but if you're looking to keep the boat for years to come then, yeah go ahead, because once you do a full restore you'll have a boat that you KNOW is sound and will last.

The only problem with your suggestion of a donor hull, is it's near impossible to find one that age that's in any better shape than the one you have, just the nature of the beasts...(not saying they are not out there, but very rare)

So bottom line: Should I fix her up can only be answered by you and you alone.....

Now one last note, your saying go ahead and fish with it like it is.....well personally I wouldn't recommend it...

Go Price a NEW 18 Ft Open bow I/O boat. Then consider how much 100-200 hours of your time is worth. Then add somewhere around $1,500 to $3,000 dollars to the equation for materials. Then after you have the NEW Price and the Restore Price you can come up with an answer to your "Worth It" question from a monetary perspective. From a learning experience and an enjoyable project...Most of us think it's worth it, but we're all CRAZY!!!!!
