CDI113-3072 Power Pack, Johnson, Evinrude, 4, 8 Cylinder

Installing on my 85 120hp. I'm just now realizing I have to use the old single wire amphenol connector from the old powerpack. I was able to pull it off the old powerpack easily enough but installing the amphenol connector on the new mail pin side seems to be a bit stubborn.

The manual says lube the stuff with alcohol but that doesn't seem to be working too good. I was going to try silicone spary as I've used it with building wires for engines, but it says not to use anything else. What's the trick to sliding the amphenol connector onto the new powerpack single wire pin?

Isopropyl alcohol (hardware store, not drug store) usually works fine if the amphenol plug is clean.

Re: New powerpack, old amphenol install?

Thanks. I ended up getting it in there and seated carefully guiding it in with a needle nose pliers.

I do have another problem though - now it won't start and it sounds like the engine is trying to fire 180* out. If I crank for 3 seconds at a time, it sounds like it trys to fire then the motor stops spinning. I crank again, no sound of firing but the motor gets tight again and stops. I have the wires hooked up per CDI's instructions on their website. http://www.cdielectronics.com/InstallSheet/113-3072.pdf

On the CDI power pack, the longer pair of wires, which obviously go to the starboard head have Orange/blue -> top coil and just plain orange, which I'm assuming goes to bottom coil.

On the port side, there's orange/blue going to top and orange/green to bottom. <- this is how the CDI instructions say to hookup.

Please note however I only have orange/blue and plain orange on the starboard side. Process of elimination tells me orange/blue still goes to the top(short wire) and just plain orange goes to bottom, is this correct?

CDI says plain orange goes to middle coil but there is no middle coil on a v4 and there's only 4 wires coming out to plug into coils anyways so it's got to somewhere. What's wrong here? The old powerpack would start the engine up almost immediately. Now with the new pack it sounds really messed up.

What are the colors of the four powerpack wires?

On the new CDI colors are:

blue/orange blue/orange
green/orange orange

old pack
blue/orange blue/orange
pink/orange green/orange

According to CDI the difference in stripe color is length in inches. The only reference to a single solid orange wire is "middle cylinder" yet my pack has one?

Fits 1985 120, 140, 275 & 300 HP CD has a 6700 RPM Limiter. Replaces:
396224 582530 582645 583072 583073 583235 Ignition Coil Wire Lengths -
Orange/Blue 19? Orange/Pink 28? Orange/Green 23? Orange/Violet 24?

582530 is # on the old pack.

ok.. i suppose I'm retarded. I swapped the pairs of orange wires and it works now.

Apparently, the longest pair of wires don't go to the far (starboard) side of the engine like the omc powerpack.
