well i bought a new shift cable and i can not know if the cable is adjusted right, there is like two lines comming from the trim pump to a valve and when u push the valve the outdrive will get in gear? (did i say that right)
i also have a small black button next to the shift box, anyone know what that is? and also i thought i adjusted the valves right but i was wrong i was reading the book like 10 times i even print it out so i can read it more but i still dont get it how you adjust the valves??????? 1981 merc 120 4cyl
oh and another thing my t-stat was no good so i took it off and left it off just to try the motor so my ? is do i need a t-stat???

Head on up to the adults only section and download your engine and drive. In there you will find all the procedures to adjust your cable.

Oh boy.... I think you need to read the manual front to back and it will tell you what valve your talking about.
Coz it sounds like your talking about the reverse lock valve.... and it has nothing to do with how the drive shifts.

did you replace the cable from the control box to the transom or the one from the transom down to the drive.... sounds like you did the prior. You really need to have a functioning lower cable before you can adjust the upper. But it is all there in the manuals in the "adults only" section.

Its done by feel. Its hard to explain. Do you understand what the term "Lash" means? If you do then we'll go on. If you do not then we can commonly define the word "Lash".

You absolutely have to have a thermostat for everything outside of "testing" purposes.
But in reality... there are no testing purposes that require running a motor without a t-stat.

i install a new cable from the back of the motor to the out drive and what does lash mean? i will try today if i can
