Ok guys after all the help here, we finally got the motor in my friends 1987 BAYLINER 1950 CAPRI CUDDY 3.0 L CHEVY OMC W/ COBRA FOOT running.

Now after we got the motor to start we have a water leak from between the motor and the drive unit. We talked to the local dealed and they seems to think it is a freeze plug in the back of the motor that has went bad.

Does anyone have any ideas, we have ordered the manul for this boat.

Questions:

1.) Do you have to pull the drive unit to be able to pull the motor.

2.) While we are in there is there anything we should change so that later on we are not like shoot we should have done that while we had the motor out. .

3.) Also the drive unit seems sort of loud to us, we had water to the unit the whole time we were running the motor. we pull the boat in gear and everything seems to be working.

Yes, you SHOULD pull the drive. It's cheaper than screwing up the coupler.
And you will have to remove the drive on installation so you can do the re-alignment.

2.) While we are in there is there anything we should change so that later on we are not like shoot we should have done that while we had the motor out.
Look at everything under the engine, bilge pumps, hoses, wiring anything down low or to either side that you can't easily get to later.

3.) Also the drive unit seems sort of loud to us, we had water to the unit the whole time we were running the motor. we pull the boat in gear and everything seems to be working.
Water has destroyed many drives. Water is not a good lubricant.

Might want to step back and look at this project and find out what it's all going to cost to get fixed. It already sounds like a lot more money than the boat is worth, or more that you can buy a running boat in good shape for.

Re: New Problems

Don thanks for the reply.

On the drive unit what should we look for as in worn or our of spec parts.

Does the manul cover the removal of the drive and motor.

So far we have like 500 dollars tied up in the boat. I didn't think that was that bad.
