New prop or new motor?

Hello all. I recently aquired a 63 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin (cheap). Got it to run a Tracker Sportsman 16 modified v. The motor runs fine, but the prop is spun (motor goes up in rpms but boat doesn't move). A new prop cost more than what I paid for the motor. I can get a 70s model Johnson 25 for $300, but its a long shaft. I also still have a 63 Gale 5hp in my posession. The boat is rated for up to 35hp. Should I spend more $ in the 9.5 or move on to a larger motor? I can prob sell the 9.5 on craigslist, not a huge difference between it and the 5 horse. Lastly is there something I can do at home to repair the spun prop since the motor isn't very strong? I know it takes a hydraulic press for larger props, this one is a 8 1/4 X 8 pin drive. Thanks in advance for your help, the 9.5 is the largest motor I've ever run.

You can pin the pro hub to the prop itself using a drill, tap, and a couple od stainless set screws, similar to these photos.

Thanks for the prompt response. Where do I get it and how much does it cost.

Did you try the prop from the Gale, might fit.

Different set up. The evinrude has three parts the gale has two parts on the prop.

If you have to pay someone to have it pinned you might as well have have it rehubbed at a prop shop.
You will struggle with the 9.5 to make any real speed on that boat. The 9.5 is good for about 20 on a light reasonably fast boat
a 25 could make over 30.and do much better handling a load.
If your handy you could raise the transom for the 25. or get a jack plate.
It may be possible to converted to a short shaft. An easy project for the mechanically inclined.

Kinda leaning toward the 25 hp option, just concerned about the long shaft. Will that put the tiller way up in the air from a seated position? Performance issues?

Go for the larger engine, will have more fun and punch to move that 16" footer. Prop's hubs besides being rubber pressed inside are also heat vulcanized. A propp just pressed will not last, only good for displacement speeds, at constant wot will spun hub very fast...

Happy Boating

The 25 should do real well compared to a 9.5. You have to solve the height difference or it won't work right.
The handle will be about 5" higher.I don't see that as a problem.
Tracker Sportsman is only 240 lbs so properly setup should do well. Its rated for 25 hp.

Those old props had shear pins. Is your pin sheared?

If the problem is with the prop, just buy another prop and enjoy your day. You cannot worry about nickels and dimes, which this is.

No, the pin is intact. The rubber in the prop is spun. I know I have to spend $, the ? Was $100 or so on a prop or $300 on a long shaft 25 hp. Thanks for your input sir.

Good evening gentlemen. I sold the 9.5 & bought the 25. Broke even, same price & it turns out the 25 is a short shaft. Thanks for your input. T.J

Maiden voyage on the 25 hp. Boy does she scoot, went from about 5mph to like 35 mph. Glad I went bigger, she rolls now. Thanks guys

Re: New prop or new motor?

35 is probably a little optimistic but over 30 is very possible. If we can't get prop size, wot rpm and gps speed it would be nice to have a gps speed and the prop size.At least we could get a very rough idea if the motor is within the rpm range.
If you could pin down the year of the motor that would help too. The 69-76 25 is rated ay 5000-6000 rpm and are very light.
Model number will help.
