New Prop or Smart Tabs

Need some advice here, I have been learning to wakeboard behind my 1999 Procraft Fish & Ski 170 with a prop pitch of 24"

It is taking my boat around 12 seconds of WOT to get on plane and the boat is going around 18mph at the threshold of getting on plane. This is very slow compared to wakeboard boats that seem to almost get on plane instantly.

Also, it is difficult to learn wakeboarding because during this watersport the average speed I want to go is around 18mph and since my boat is barely on plane at this speed it is forcing me to wakeboard at faster speed then I want to go.

I want to get on plane quickly and then be able to cruise at slow speeds on plane.

My question is what will solve my problem cheapest and most efficiently, smart tabs or a new prop ...maybe a P20 prop?

it would help to know what motor you have, and what wot rpms you are turning, with out skiing. 24 is a lot of pitch and is for speed, it sounds like you are over propped already, with out towing. a combination of both, would do wonders.

Totally, 100% agree. It sounds like both would be the ticket, but gotta have the info . . .

It is a Mercury 125 ELPTO and while I don't have a GPS the speedo says it will go 57 mph, this is trimmed out in optimal conditions. With motor maxed out the RPM reads around 5000 to 5500.

Does this info provide what you are looking for?

Re: New Prop or Smart Tabs

I understand that the WOT range is 4750-5250, so if anything you are underpropped based on your RPM notes above. 24" does sound steep though, so I am still somewhat confused. I would verify that the tach is correct before doing much else, but I always say that . . . ;) Oh, and of course we'd really like to see a GPS speed number. If the prop is correct as is, then Smart Tabs would make a huge difference for the issue that you are noting . . . However . . . if you are trying to build a big wake, at low speeds, Smart Tabs may actually work too well, and this is yet another reason I prefer helm adjustable tabs . . . I can lift them to build a bigger wake and reduce the associated low speed rooster . . . Good luck!

Thanks, next time I go out I will try to take some kind of GPS with me and will also pay close attention to the RPM at WOT.
