New prop too tight?

Just installed my new prop today. Hub fit fine and everything seemed great until I tightened it down. Now it wont turn by hand at all and stalls the engine, while the old one free spun without a problem. Hub and prop are the correct size. Any ideas? Do I just need to run the prop to wear it down a bit?

What motor?

Is there a thrust washer? Is it in? Or maybe in backwards?

Stop now and see if the thrust washer is stuck to your old prop.

The thrust washer goes on before the prop goes on. The washer is what the prop rides against in order to keep it from touching the lower unit housing.

prop.jpg This picture shows all the hardware needed. Item labeled "b" is the thrust washer.

Sometimes when you change brands of props, you need to use their thrust washer.

An example: If putting a Solas Amita prop on a 115 hp in line six, you'd use a Solas MDTW washer. For a V-6 150 hp you'd need a Solas METW washer.

METW hardware is for OEM & Solas (small hub) pressed rubber hub props and the MDTW is for large hubs , diameter is the difference not horsepower..

I switched from a turning point hustler 21431911 to a turning point hustler 21431511, and reused the same hub(only a couple months old) because both props take the same hub #503.

According to the notes in the prop section(Solas Amita props), the METW thrust washer is used with the 4-3/4" hubs.

Not that it has anything to do with the OP's situation, since he's using Hustler props.

Let's assume that if you loosen the Prop nut, at some point the prop will again turn by hand and be rubbing against something.

What parts are rubbing?
Look for witness marks, metal shavings, scuffed paint.

If there is interference between the hub and housing you either have the wrong prop or the wrong hardware is used to install it. Because the hub kt fits the hub and splines doesn't mean the prop is correct for the engine.

Re: New prop too tight?

We still need to know what engine we are talking about and we need to know the gearcase diameter. As stated above, if you try to put a prop designed for a large gearcase onto a small gearcase, then it will rub. Not knowing prop numbers or engine, I can not state that that is the reason for a fact.

Maybe you could post a couple of photos?

Re: New prop too tight?

Problem solved! So here it is guys, and thanks again for all the replies and awesome advice:
Usually the hustler props come with a plastic ring which mounts to the outboard side of the prop, apparently its for certain 4 stroke outboards. The ring is usually not installed on the prop, but comes bagged in the case. However, the ring was mounted on the prop and I hadnt noticed. Removed it, and the prop is fine now. Thanks again! Iboats is an awesome tool!
