New pump, is this normal

Installed a new water pump kit on my 1980 35 hp today. The new BRP pump was of a slightly different design. The old pump had a gasket between the impeller plate and the pump housing while the new pump had a rubber seal that allowed the pump housing to seat against the impeller plate. Here's my question. The impeller was somewhat thicker, at least 1/16 of an inch, than the depth of the impeller cup and I could feel it being compressed as I was tightening the housing bolts. Is that normal? The water pump kit came with step by step instructions and I'm sure I followed them correctly.

sure doesn't sound right. was the impeller all the way down on the plate? when you put the cover on. the impeller key can hold the impeller up. if not installed correctly.

Re: New pump, is this normal

Took the pump apart this morning and found what I suspected after rereading the directions. The pump housing and impeller cup on the new pump are 2 separate pieces, sealed with an o-ring where the 2 meet at the back of the cup. The o-ring had shifted out of it's groove. Thankfully I didn't crack the housing. A few dabs of sealer to hold the o-ring in place and to seal the area that got flattened and everything went together like it should. Actually there still is a gap until the screws are tightened but it is very small and is due to the cup setting on the o-ring in a normal way. The pressure of the housing is against the cup and not the impeller itself.
