1960 JOHNSON 40h.p.
Hello all,
I just got done rebuilding my first outboard motor. Everything went fine, motor fires up and hums nicley. Problem is I am still not pumping water. I replaced the impeller and housing. I watched the water pipes line right up and insert when I hooked up the lower unit. Also if I remove the Thermostat housing I can blow air down the shaft and bubbles with come out the pick up screen in the bucket it's sitting in. So I know there is no blockage there.
Yet after firing up the motor if I remove the thermostat housing that same coolant shaft and the housing are totaly dry after running the motor for 10 seconds or so. I can't figure out what gives! I am also positive that the key on the impeller seated correctly and I lubed it thoughly with a light oil whlie rotating it clockwise as I tightened the assemebly.

Since I am new at this I am wondering if there is another common problem with water flow.

It's too bad because the rest of the re-build went great.

Any thoughts would be appericiated. -Thanks

-Rooky

Make sure the water level is ABOVE the water pump.

OK, that is interesting sweed beacuse the water line was above the pick up, but not the pump. I will try that after work. Thank You!!

Then I really think you'll find it works just fine.
Just add water... :)

I hope you didn't burn your new impeller. It can happen in 20-30 seconds without water. :(

Re: NEW PUMP....STILL NO WATER FLOW

The motor did run for a total of about 30 second between 3 starts too. Crap!! I'd like to say live and learn but I should have known that the pump needed gravity fed water to star the flow of water. Oh well, Next time I'll know.

Thanks again for the help Bear.
