Hi all,

I just purchased a 1972 85 HP Chrysler, model # 857HD. I say "purchased" but I practically stole it :D

Anyway, I don't have it in my possession yet but I will next week. The motor has been stored indoors for around 10 years. The motor looks very close to brand new.

My question has to do with "things to do" BEFORE trying to start her up.

I recognize that I will need to replace the impellar, fuel pump, lower unit oil, etc. before I start using her. However, for the initial start up, what should I do?

For example, should I check the points or coat some oil in the cylinders? I'm just trying to plan a bit.

Thanks for all advice.

Shane

Don' tell me the flywheel kicked your as*? ;)
You could give each cylinder a squirt or two of fogging oil and turn it over a few times by hand with the plugs out just to be sure they got lube. Other than that, light it off.

c/6

Hooty

Kind of like when you put one away.Be sure you get
some lube into the cylinders.
And do the other stuff.
You should try to find a service manual before
starting any work on your motor.
If it uses points the gap is.013-.015.
It may use CDI ignition and there are specific instructions for testing for spark.
After market manuals are available here or NAPA auto parts,amazon.com and usually the library
among others. Parts can be hard to find and pricey
try Fairwinds Marina or possibly Twin Cities
at: www.tcoutboard.com. NAPA also has a small
Chrysler section in their 600 page Marine products manual.
Good luck.
