I have an 1983 85 HP Chrysler OB that was running great until I run up in the marsh and sucked about Qt of marsh mud in to the water jacket and burned up the motor. So, I pulled the power head, took it to the shop and had her bored .02 over with new pistons & rings. Reassimbled the engine, put the muffs on and she wouldn't start.

I resealed the exhaust cover and painted the edges with block paint and after a lot of attempts...it started and ideled....but the next day she wouldn't start for nothing. So, maybe you more experienced guys can help, this was my first rebuild & I followed the mannual. Help.

Perhaps there is now paint under a place where an electrical connection to the engine is made. Make sure it's bare metal where the wire(s), and or, components ground to the motor.

Start this troubleshooting process like any other.Do you have compression? Do you have ignition output? Are you sync and linked as you should be?Carbs rebuilt? Those could be the reason this thing went to hell in the first place. That ought to get you started.

Hay thanks all for the rapid response. Tried your sugestions i.e. yes good spark, good compression, & its gettin gas.

That leaves timeing: this thing has a distributer and a timing belt. You set the TDC mark on the flywheel to alighn with the "I" mark on the timing pointer. Then remove the timming belt, rotate the distributer pully until the curved line (on teh pully) alighns with the curve of the fly wheel...and here is the problem.., teh curve line on the pully won't alighn, its off in directions i.e. when you get it in place the noyched belt won't go on and when it does go on it pulls the pully out of alighnment...? So, you think the boring the cylinders 0.020 over could thise , maybe.. ? Back at ya

Dgrant...you set the distributor close to the arc as you said, that should get it close enough for you to set the timing...ifn you havn't a book to explain how to set the timing, let me know and I will try to explain hows to accomplish this...also you need to have the choke working properly to start this motor...just some Thoughts
