new rectifier...bad test

i just bought a new rectifier for my 90 hp merc. and i tested it as the manual says but i don't get continuity across any terminals. does this mean its bad?

No... Do you know what a rectifier is, internally? It's 4 diodes in a bridge formation. If you get continuity from any terminal to another it means the rectifier is shorted, and no good.

no i didn't know that...but in the manual it says to test the rectifier.
  1. connect the red test lead to the alternator terminal.
  2. connect the black lead to the positive terminal of the rectifier.
  3. the ohmmeter should read continuity.
  4. reverse the test leads
  5. the ohmmeter should indicate no continuity.

Set the meter to the 'Diode' function... You should get about 0.7 as 'continuity'.

i get .056...i guess i was looking at the wrong kinda rectifier test....thanks for the help.
