Hello Everyone

My family purchased a used 98 Reinell 197 with the 5.7 V8, it is in excellent shape. We've had it out on the water twice now, and before the last outing I decided to change the outdrive oil because the PO recommended it. The oil was a little bit milky, but I changed the O-rings on the drain plug and dipstick hoping this would fix it. It didnt, I just drained it again and it is just as milky. I am pretty mechanical and work on all of my own vehicles, but I have never gotten my hands on a boat outdrive. I am looking for a little guidance here, What do I do next? I didnt flush out the outdrive when I changed the oil, would this make a difference? Please help, I have a 6 day houseboat trip coming up and am anticipating a lot of hours put on the boat, I wanted to get this fixed ASAP.

Much appreciated,
Dean

First thing you need to do is pull the drive and see if there is water in the bellows. Common problem if the bellows are old. If dry in the bellows, then drain the gear lube and pressure test the drive to 15 psi of air, then spray soapy water on everything to find where the leak is. It will blow bubbles.

Okay thank you. I have a manual for the boat that says I need an engine hoist to pull the drive... is this really necessary? does anyone have any tips for getting the drive off safely? I'd hate to drop it on the ground or something.

Thanks!
