Be sure to check out our new safety forum http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

If you have any ideas for good topics or something you would like to contribute yourself PM me or another mod.

This new forum is for information purposes only so you won't see an option to reply/comment, or even start a new topic.

We simply wanted to raise safety awareness and help our members with some basic boating knowledge, maybe even save someone's life.

Go check it out! :)

Re: New Safety Forum

Just wish we could post there. There have been lots of threads that are safety related, and that would make a good home for those and the likes.

Re: New Safety Forum

ban idiots and outlaw stupidity???
that would take half the fun out of my job and 1/4 the fun of hanging out at boat ramps.
some times the darwin awards are justified :) :).
its amazing to see how many boats come in with rotten life jackets and throw cushions.
expired EPIRBS and flare kits.
non working bilge pumps and blowers.
fire extinguishers so corroded they scare me, on board fire suppresion systems that havent worked in 20 years.
oil sorb pads in the bilge from oil or diesel leaks.
alarm system inoperative for engine warnings or high bilge water indicate.
then when I note it I get told, well they didnt work when I got it or I cut the wires cause it kpt false detecting.
most folks are simply their own worst enemy.

Forward them to me via PM and I will be sure to get them up there.

The reason for the no post forum is because we don't want it to turn into stupid human tricks or worse. It really is just for information purposes. I welcome any suggestions on additional topics or enhancements to those already there.

Sorry to nitpick.

The definition of a "forum" is a place for open discussion.

Personally, I feel it would have more value if it truly was a forum.

Just my opinion

Re: New Safety Forum

This needs to be a true forum with the same sort of rules as currently exists in Dockside Chat. No politics, no whines about various federal/state rules and why they have been implemented, etc.

Without the ability to contibute and discuss, this topic area will probably receive very little traffic and its educational potential will be diminished greatly. Its about like having an Evinrude/Johnson forum full of nothing but stickies.

I also think having an open discussion area will give those who wish to make posts on various accidents and the lessons that can be learned form them, a good home.

I feel very strongly about this and hope my thought will be considered.

Re: New Safety Forum

I'm assuming that it will include etiquette as well? That should be a mind blowing read.

I think etiquette, as it applies to creating a safer environment is fine. I would be careful, however, of opening the forum area to other issues, because it will dilute its purpose.

Re: New Safety Forum

I understand the reason for the "Read Only" forum, but when I wanted to add a supporting anecdote to a topic there, I have to do it elsewhere. I can see how that discussion could turn into another SHT or DC forum, though.

Re: New Safety Forum

I appreciate your comments and I will make sure we discuss this further. Just know that I wasn't the one that decided to make it read only, just merely suggested we HAVE a safety forum. I was thrilled when it finally came to be.

Personally, I didn't see anything wrong with their decision to having it read only. I guess we have Forum Rules & Guidelines which is read only, so maybe it makes sense to have Safety rules and guidelines the same way.

I believe the intention is to keep it as positive as we can to raise awareness without focusing so much on the horrible things that are happening from careless people or just accidents in general.

Sometimes just straight facts get a message across better than the confusion of many comments.

The mods will discuss this further.
