I just installed new starter brushes in my Delco Remy starter. The boat cranked easily but I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the starter. It had a slight odor but nothing burning. Is this normal when new brushes are installed? Any help would be greatly appreciated, the stripers are calling!!!!

You should not have smoke coming from the starter, better remove it and ck for a short or bad connection

Re: New starter brushes, HELP!!!

I guess it depends on what you call a little smoke. New brushes will be flat not curver to fit the comutator. This means only a small strip touches the comutator and some small burning is normal. With the starter out you can run the starter on a lower voltage so you do not over rev it and burn in the brushes. This is not done very often on starter. For that matter it seems today most spend $100 on a new starter instead of $5 for new brushes. However on dc motors used in printer, disk drives or other computer related dc motors (not stepper Motors) it is very common to run the motor in for hours at a low voltage and rpm. It will get better every time you use it.
