New starter on Force 70HP disengaging

I just replaced the starter on my 70HP force as a result of the fact that the small lip around the terminal hole (heavy red wire) where the starter lug bolt goes through the end cap had broken off making it impossible to tighten the nut. The old starter would engage but didn't have enough torque to turn the motor over.

I purchased a new starter, learned a few new words while fighting to get the old one out and finally succeeded and replaced it. Now, when I turn the key, the starter engages and cranks the motor over like gangbusters for about 1-2 seconds, then disengages and stops (NO spinning bendix) just as if I'd let go of the key.

Unlike most of the similar posts here, my starter doesn't continue spinning when the bendix disengages. It's just as if the power to the starter is cut off after 1-2 seconds each time.

Once I've cranked the motor 8 or 10 times in this manner, eventually it will start but cranking 2 seconds at a time, when the engine is cold can take a while...

Is there some sort of overcurrent protection in the solenoid or something? Perhaps the new starter is drawing more current than it is supposed to and causing the solenoid to open after a second or two?

Any suggestions?

That starter is defective.I had the same problem with a Bronco. It would turn for a min then spin free.
Go through it and see if the brushes are free.Or the magnets are loose.
Something in there is wrong.
Maybe, try spraying some WD in the switch and see if that helps.J

Thank for the reply - I'm not sure but my issue may be a little different than what you describe - Once mine disengages (after 2 seconds of turning the motor over) it doesn't spin free... It just stops and the bendix drops back down as if the power had been removed or I'd let go of the key...

Still possibly a problem with the starter itself I guess?

Here's a real simple test. Put a test light or voltmeter on the heavy red cable terminal on the starter and attempt to start the engine, being sure not to release the key from the start position. When the starter stops turning, check the test light/ voltmeter. If voltage is present, brush up on your vocabulary and replace the starter again. If voltage is not present, correct that cause and you'll be good to go.

Your solenoid could be breaking down after a couple of seconds.J

Jump power directly to the starter to test it.
If it spins 5 seconds or longer, suspect the solenoid.
