I need to replace the steering on a 16 foot boat with a 77 Merc 1150. I am looking for recommendations on affordable, but good quality steering setups. I checked fleabay and came across this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ufle...8561276QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear

Does anyone here have experience with this brand/model of steering? Are there any other systems anyone would suggest, again, keeping cost at $200 or lower and getting decent quality for it.

How fast is that boat? If it goes over 50, I would put on a dual rack NFB system. At least NFB. Things happen way too fast to have your steering snap to one side just because someone lost their seat.

the Teleflex site, or for that matter the back of any teleflex steering system box has an application safety chart.

hope it helps

Re: New steering recommendations???

To be honest I have no idea how fast the boat is capable of moving. It is a 79 Procraft bass boat that weighs 750 pounds. The tach and speedo are not functional at this time. I just picked this thing up as a project, and it's the first boat I have ever owned.

I had a somewhat successful outing with it yesterday until the steering cable wore its way through the plastic housing and started to snake it's way out from it. I was able to regain steering by holding the housing and cable together with one hand while steering it with the other. It got us back to shore but obviously needs to be replaced.

While a dual NFB setup would be nice, I don't think I am willing to spend 400 bucks on steering for this boat.

Can you explain what exactly you mean by this statement...

"Things happen way too fast to have your steering snap to one side just because someone lost their seat."? Thanks.
