I managed to melt down my Alpha One Stern Drive. I have pulled it off the back of the boat and believe I am ready to order a new one

  1. questions
  2. How do I know what to order?
  3. Who do I order it from?
  4. Will shipping cost less from a closer dealer?
Info from the paper work says Alpha one 4.3L - 4.3LX
and on the side I can 1.84 R and 0F174988

Any help would be great

Re: New Stern Drive

If you would like to go aftermarket, here is a good option and what you need, SE116 1.81 Complete (Replaces Mercruiser Gen II) | sterndrive.cc

If you would like to support iboats and the forum that likes to help when possible, then here is what you need for the upper unit, Complete Upper Unit Assembly for Mercruiser 1547-861063A8 - Sierra 18-2418
and here is the lower unit, Complete Lower Unit Assembly for Mercruiser 1623-815822A53 - Sierra 18-2400

You may need to switch out Speedometer connectors with a different style. Also you will need a alpha drive install kit and drive oil with the aftermarket drives.

If you want to go with Mercruiser OEM, Google search or input part number 5-5121400TP. Mercruiser by Mercury Marine part lookup Mercruiser also offers remanufactured and CPO drives at a lower cost. CPO OEM MerCruiser Alpha 1 gen 2 Outdrive 1.81 - RePowerMyBoat.com

For some reason I was under the impression iboats sold SEI drives. But I cannot find any here?

They used to list them here. Not sure what happened. I would buy the complete SEI drive. The complete drive comes with a 3 year warranty.

If you can't find it, FT????? :D

How about an SEI Gen II, 1.81 complete, upper and lower. $2725, $98 S&H, no core deposit. Saves almost $500 over buying the two chunks separately. I think this is competitor friendly - 1991-2012 Mercruiser Stern Drive Complete Drive Assembly - 1.81 gear ratio - New - iboats.com

And don't forget the iboats low price guarantee.

EDIT - I have no idea if this is SEI after seeing thumpar's post.

Re: New Stern Drive

I made an assumption (you know how that goes) that the unit I posted was from SEI, but the warranty details say Vendor 2 is with a 1 year warranty. Thump's Vendor 199 is 3 year, which matches SEI and is much less $$$ than Vendor 2.

It is a problem finding the right stuff. What's wrong with IDing the vendor? SEI is a reputable vendor, I have no idea who "Vendor 2" or "Vendor 199" actually is. People do purchase based on name brand.

I think the one you posted is an actual Merc factory drive but hard to say not know who vendor 2 is.

Good find thumper! Thank you. I tried finding it for a while even tried google for a bit. Only relations to SEI was help in the forums.:noidea:

While we do have a habit of posting a link to SEI all the time because it's just easier to find, talk about and show the new members all the good or bad stuff about them, But business wise it would be better for iboats if we could try posting a link showing iboats sells the same item at about the same price. In all honesty if we keep posting a link to the "factory" the iboats member would then just be able to buy the drives directly from SEI skipping iboats altogether.;)

But when I couldn't find it earlier, I posted the link to SEI so the OP has all the options in front of him.

Re: New Stern Drive

I find it a bit strange that people have trouble looking things up on iboats. I have always found what I'm looking for without too much trouble. I have used several methods, the OEM number, a general category search, or a 'drill-down' to find a component.

Try drilling down to find an outdrive. I have not found a way. Since they use a vendor number the company is not listed so you can't use that. When I finally found the SEI drive it was under powerhead and lower units but can't seem to find that as a section.

Ayuh,.... right Now, I have a "Boat Motor Parts" page open, 'n can't use the search to see if iboats sells the Delco EST,...

When I move my cursor to type/ paste in the text, the bubble drops down(search this category, or all of iboats store), not allowing text to be entered,...
A 1/2 hour ago, I entered the text, 'n there was No button to click to search,...

A few days ago, lookin' up parts for a poster, I found myself in a circle jerk,....

Click a link to a page, next link to next page, next click to next link,..... Right back to the 1st page,....
'round, 'n round, No part found nowhere,.....

Drill down through the 'ignition components' section. Or, as I just did, type in "Delco Distributor" and press enter. 3 different delco dissys, 4cyl, V6 and V8....
