Engine Model MCM 140 Serial No. OA343460. Trying to install new point set Part No.34235Q 1. There is no screw terminal on the new points for the distributer and condenser leads, only a plastic insert thing. Is the point spring pressure supposed to hold the terminal ends? Doesn't work, they are loose enough to pull out by hand. The part number seems right for this engine. Help, help.

How do I transmit a photo from an Ipad?

In the reply box you will see an icon which looks like a tree in a frame. Select the icon and it will have a widow which allows you to find the photo on you computer or (I think Ipad). Find the pic or pics and then select upload. If you have something at a URL select the URL tab

I have a good photo as a JPG file. Can't see the tree icon anywhere. How do I post this thing?

i don't have what ya got for an engine, but i do have points and i believe i understand what your saying.
yes, friction is supposed to hold connectors good enough. like you, i didn't think they made to great of contact. for me, it wasn't that, but the fact that the part was improper for my distributor in that no matter how i adjusted them, the point were never even close to being closed. i don't remember the part number, but i looked up the number and my mercruiser dealer looked up the number and we agreed. i personally pulled the point set out of a fresh bag of points with the proper number. i never discovered what was up. but they woud't work.
sorry about the long story. all to just say i got serria points that crossed to the merc part number and they were just what i needed. to include a nut to hold the wires onto the point set. maybe that's the answer to your problem too.
fwiw. i usually always get merc parts and am not fond of aftermarket. but in this case. it's what i needed to do. good luck.

I will get some Serria points tomorrow. The Quicksilver set the Merc dealer gave me have the exact same part number but no screw terminal. They are rediculous, you can lift the distributer wire terminal right up out of the "friction connection" with very little effort. The condenser wire terminal is so loose it wiggles. These points were made in Taiwan. There may be another loose connection between Mercury Marine and Taiwan. Thanks very much for your good advice!

Looks like Whiskey answered your question and I better understand it now. For next time the icon I mentioned is the 4th over from the right. Going from right to left there is "ABC", a "note", "film strip" and then what I call the "tree"

This distributor is from an inline 165 but would be very similar.

I have installed this type on some engines and never had a problem with enough spring tension to hold the wires. I guess like everything else things are being made cheaper and quality control is gone by the wayside in many manufacturers.
